I agree that by intentionally breeding dogs in Belize, you are actively contributing to the overpopulation and subsequent deaths of dogs that are surplus to requirement, unwanted, uncared for, abandoned and abused.
But, should you wish to breed your Dalmatian responsibly, please consider that this can't be done in Belize as the necessary tests that anyone who cares about Dalmatians would want to undertake to prevent the possibility of passing on hereditary disease are not available here.
Dalmatians carry a number of serious hereditary diseases and any dogs testing positive for these diseases should not be bred from. Not only would dogs that inherit these diseases be undesirable for potential purchasers but they could suffer and cost new owners a great deal of money in veterinary care. Some of the diseases Dalmatians should be tested for before breeding include:
BAER test to test for genetic deafness, which is a serious problem in Dalmatians. Many are culled (killed) or abandoned later in life because of this problem.
CERF test for eye disease, which Dalmatians can pass on.
HD test for hip dysplasia.
Hope you find this helpful.
I love my dogs and, if I wanted to breed (which I don't), I would be very concerned about the risks. Breeding can result in complications during pregnancy, whelping and afterwards. We do have limited access to veterinary care and resources in Belize. I don't know if I could ever forgive myself if my dog or some of the puppies died. Not to mention the fact that the sexually transmitted disease TVT is rampant in Belize and it is deadly. This is why choosing a sire for a litter of puppies based on the fact that he might be the only guy in town, is not the safest thing for your lovely dog. If you want the experience of a litter of puppies, offer to foster a litter for SAGA. If you know people who want a dog, take them to SAGA and help them pick out a new puppy that already desperately needs a home.
