What you are looking for is "pasteurized" juices. Just check the labels. Refrigeration isn't required until opened and even without, lasts longer than fresh.

Caribbean Pride Orange juice is highly recommended.

Unless this is a new friend they must have worked last time. These are emergency measures when a diabetic needs a quick sugar rush. I am not into arguing with people but remember the good is not the enemy of the perfect.

I know that you can purchase diabetic emergency candy (sic). Can't remember the name. But you carry it with you and in case of emergency you chew one or 2 - quick fix just like that.

My cousin who visited me here last year carried a jar of peanut butter for the quick fixes. No refrigeration needed.

Thanks everyone for all of these suggestions. This young man has been diabetic for many years, so when he specifically asked for the non-refrigerated OJ I believe that's what he wants. I've ordered candy bars, peanut butter, and he'll bring other options. I was present when candy bars didn't work fast enough, but orange juice kicked right in, so I'm going to have LOTS of choices! We're just trying to be prepared for an event we hope never happens. I knew there would be plenty of suggestions and I appreciate all of them. Thank you!

In the case of severe diabetic shock OJ is much easier to assimilate into the system. If you've been with someone who has gone into shock it's a lot easier to get them to drink than to chew down on hard candy or candy bars and the relief is much faster; if they have glucose tablets that you can crush and dissolve in the juice even better.

There are tubes of glucose you can buy that require no refrigeration. Made just for that purpose. I keep a few in my med kit. Liquids can be problematic (aspiration) whereas the glucose is absorbed in the mouth and doesn't have to be swallowed. Easier to carry than OJ.

Thank you Simon and C2C - great information! I'll ask him about the glucose.
