With snorkeling, diving and beaching it all day...what is Belize nightlife like? What are the best bars and pubs and how off is the "off season" really during july and august? Any suggestions for a group of singles ages 25-30 to do??
Thanks much!
Okay...last question I promise. How safe are the streets? While hoildaying Roatan, friends and I had a bit of a mugging incident with some locals. Fortunately, all we lost was a few dollars, a camera and my sister's favorite handbag. It was scary b/c the streets looked pretty safe.

Are your questions about Belize or about Ambergris Caye in particular? Ambergris Caye is just one tiny part of the country of Belize (and not very representative of the country, to be candid), just as Roatan is just one tiny part of Honduras?

Whoops....I am asking about AC's nightlife. Thanks!
Yes, I know Roatan is a tiny part of Honduras. I was mugged there. I do not want to paint a bad picture of Roatan...the island was beautiful and I would go back in a second.

A prudent person should always be aware of their surroundings and take reasonable precautions no matter where they go. However, I've walked all over the place at night, and often by myself, many times. I never had a problem. The closest I ever came, was during daylight hours, when a fellow that I was slightly acquainted with tried to intimidate me into giving him $20. I just laughed at him as if I thought he was joking with me and then drove away on my golfcart. I may have laughed but I was pretty nervous nonetheless. What I'm trying to say is, there are no guarantees but I believe SP to be *very* safe.

I'd like to hear more about the mugging in Roatan, if you are willing to share. Where exactly were you when it happened? If they were locals that mugged you and the island being reasonably small, wouldn't it have been easy for the police to pick them up?
As for SP, I just want to add, that there have been a couple of rare incidents that were kind of serious but I believe that was because the victims had been flashing around their wealth. You know, big honking diamonds and carrying wads of cash that they were showing off, etc. I don't know if anything like that has happened lately. The stories that I am recalling happened a couple of years ago. Anyway, that's why I say, you should take the same reasonable precautions that you would anywhere.
I'm seriously not trying to scare you. Remember, I believe it to be quite safe there and even while walking across town in the middle of the night by myself, I was quite comfortable.

How big is your group? Will you be in AC for your whole trip? I will be coming down there in late July with a friend and would love to meet up with some other younger people.

Hey Seashell.
I still think Roatan to be pretty safe. I was just curious if robbery among tourist was a common occurance in AC/SP. According to the local authority and some of the locals we spoke to it is not in Roatan.
We all decided to go into town...there was a fesitval going on in Coxen Hole. It was still early (about 9pm), two local male teenagers asked us for money and before we can say or do anything, they snatched my sister's handbag and ran. There were some people around but everyone, including ourselves, just stood there it happened so fast. I suppose we were more surprised than scared. We reported the incident and the next day we were informed that they were caught.
Knowing that this could of happened to anyone, anywhere...we did not let it ruin our night, our holiday or our great memories of Roatan.
I am so excited for Belize....! Thanks for all your info.

Thanks for the details. You are right, it doesn't sound too scary; just annoying. Good for you guys, not letting it put you off your good time. I'd be *extremely* surprised if anything like that happened in SP.
