Have we ever considered that people, like the mayor, who live here do not want this to stay a sleepy little fishig village?
They certainy are caught on the horns of a delimea - grow (=better, bigger, nicer) or cater to the tourists?
Now that everyone has TV's, cell phones and some have real automobiles, why do we not understand that they see and hear things that make them want more. Then if the tourists don't come what do they do? I'm just thinking out loud so don't bash me.
I don't know how to find a middle of the road (pun appropriate) solution and do find that the families that live here and have run this island for a long time do not want to hear from me and most of you.
Ms H, I'll not bash, because I understand what your saying I'll simply comment and raise a few questions as well.
If this is still a sleepy little fishing village I'll be hornswoggled. I get the desire to progress, but that progression at what cost? Why can it not be done with cultural character and progress both in mind?
There are locals involved at the community level who see the same things about this project that those here do. We're talking about the ill considered actions of what seems to be only two people impressing their will, tastes, and views on the community. How is that right?
You are right though, if the guests to this island begin to perceive that Isla Bonita is turning into Isla Uglita the place will return to being a sleepy little fishing village although how much fish would be available for a sustenance culture would remain to be seen as well...
