In regards to the " ROAD " in front of Reef Village being the worst ,that is because everyone north of the bridge uses that part of the road to get to the bridge !!!!! It needs a stone base to pack down , and elevation and drainage pipes,so it lasts longer than a few months.Let to GOB bring over the aggragate, than we could chip in for the grader. I have a home north of Blue Reef ,which is about 8 miles north. The worst parts of the " ROAD " are behind Port-o-Fina and just north of Mata - Chica .Any discussion of road work should include the area at least up to Saphire Beach.Let it be at least 50/50 , GOB/with town counsel help and the private sector , then I believe it would happen right away.

Well, I knew that! But isn't it more fun when people can impress conjecture and conjure it into facts on the street?

Any local or "resident" that has spent considerable time on the Caye can only imagine the accidents/problems that would occur if this road were to be paved. Excessive speed is abundant in town, deaths already occur. I wonder if they could get up to 60mph on this new stretch, probably not because it would be highly patrolled and monitored. This "Autobahn" would be insane, any local knows this......... A properly constructed "gravel" road is totally sufficient given the population and resources in this area.

That's why they invented speed bumps, put them every 1/8 mile or so , no problem!

In some areas lots of sand has been dumped trying to make a road and it does not work. Now the thought is to put hardcore and fixed. The problem is what lies under the fill. In many areas the fill has been place on top of non-compactable peateous material so it will beyond any doubt fail and continue to fail regardless of the amt of fill you dump unless the substrata is removed first. Road engineering is required.
A sensible solution is to use enzyme soil stabilizing techniques to avoid potholes and washouts and limit traffic to golf carts and 4 wheelers, no taxis or pick ups or construction equipment, just as the law currently reads, and we should have not so much problem. When any heavy traffic hits the roads will not withstand the weight due to what is underneath. A road that will handle low speed golf carts and 4 wheelers is different from a road carrying speeding loaded taxis and occasional heavy traffic. The substrata does not allow that kind of traffic without considerable engineering and lots of fill.

COMMUNICATION - Interesting word. What one person means by paved is not necessarily what another means. I bristle at the word as I think blacktop which of course does not work in this heat. What do you mean when you say 'paved."
The design for the frontage of Reef Village as was presented in the original plans submitted by Mr. Jeff Pierce - oh so many years ago - was for two lanes with palm trees down the middle; kind of like Capt. Morgan's has done behind their resort.
The other thing is that there really is no road. There are utility easements - or right-of-ways.
Mike C. Thank you for explaining why the same potholes open up time after time.
Can we concentrate of a few of the worst areas? Maybe start with culverts and raised road bed from the bridge to the hill past the Cloisters. Maybe we could do one lane for golf carts -and keep the big trucks off - with wide spots as suggested. Then make the trucks and taxis use the old potholed other lane. Maybe they could use some pressure to have the government fix a road for them. Wishful thinking.
Of course there is conflict up here. Like the "wild wild west" this is the "don't tell me what to do North!" Access and lights are lightning rods to verbal shoot-outs.
Thanks Capt. Hollywood for setting up a shooting gallery. LOL

Sounds like what's needed is the US Army Corps of Engineers set on this.

I think Harriette hit on a decent idea there which is provide road the width of a golf cart or 4 wheeler, it would be cheaper, faster to construct eliminate the larger trucks and vehicles from damaging the road and would solve the issues of bikes and vehicles using the beach.

As Mike says for a proper road with the strength to take trucks taxis and other heavy vehicles it will take a lot of money, engineering and most of all time.

In Holland they have small roads I guess you can call them which are specifically for bicycles and scooters they are about 6ft wide and run along side the main road for regular traffic.

Might be an idea to implement the cycle/bike/golf cart path first then add the main road later if the whole thing cant be done immediately
