What planet do you live on "SnowWhite5080"? Just for a start the Serengeti plain is in Africa and not a separate place. Secondly, how many times have you been to Africa and where exactly are these villages with internet service for all and no cost factor? Frankly, you sound like some liberal college student with very little life experience and certainly no knowledge of Belize or the culture. While your goal may be worthwhile, at least about getting access to the internet for the children, your strategy is pure fantasy.

Not a Liberal, I'm a registered Republican. Not a college student, have traveled extensively and know from experience that most people who love to debate do little to find solutions.

Continuing The Internet Conversation

Earlier this week - we had an interview with Dr. Dionne Maranda, a top BTL Executive who responded to the criticism that BTL's internet is too slow and too expensive - when compared to other countries in the Caribbean.

Well, the interview generated loss of buzz to our email - and cell phones. It seems that the trouble with Belize's internet is something everyone wants to give their two cents on.

And that's because in the information age - while less than a fifth of Belize's population have access to the internet -see its uses and want more out of it for less money.

Here's more of our discussion about that with Dr. Miranda:..

Jules Vasquez
"Internet is expensive because so many few people use it. That is basically the argument."

Dr. Dionne Miranda - Customer Services Manager, BTL
"It's so few people use it and also the fact that our telecom license for instance - we have to offer universal access even in remote areas and so many of our services subsidized certain services and I can tell you that that is one of the reasons why it's very difficult for us to unilaterally lower rates from time to time as well."

Jules Vasquez
"Has it occurred to you all that perhaps the fact that the internet being cheap or whether it is expensive and the existence of large corporations are inter-related that when you have inexpensive internet it drives economic and corporate growth and when you have expensive internet its retards that growth."

Dr. Dionne Miranda - Customer Services Manager, BTL
"Isn't that a bit myopic Jules in thinking that only internet would drive the growth of business or not. Isn't it the cost of doing business, a global recession, high cost of financing, a not prepared work force to deal with industrial needs within a particular environment, the lack of all the growth of fiscal incentive and all of that - I think you have to look at it as an entire package. What is the technological direction and focus for the growth of the country? I do believe that internet plays its role but I would think it would be a bit facetious to look at only one element of economy or business and blame its growth or lack of growth on that."

Just talked with a friend of mine who spent 4 months this year in Nigeria and Benin and 3g is widely used by people in the city and the rural area. When she was in Kenya last year it was the same. He son whose 14 said all the kids are computer knowledgeable. He even talked about the $200 computers he saw when he was there. The cost to get on the web was small enough for most people to get. He said as soon as the generators turn on so do the computers.

His line of thought seems reasonable enough. Rowan says the continent remains largely underpenetrated in terms of access to Internet services. According to recent data made available from Internet World Stats, Internet penetration in the continent currently stands at 11.5%. To put it into perspective, close to 120 million Africans out of the continent's over 1 billion people are currently online. "

That doesn't sound like every villager in Africa has internet access to me. That's from the reference you gave.

Not interested in a contest with you but I am suggesting that your comments stray pretty far from reality at this in this instance.

People are seriously gonna argue about the internet penetration in Africa? I hope a hurricane puts us out of our misery.
