Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I was thinking about the changes that would be required in terms of security infrastructure and policies and the subsequent loss of the informal convenience afforded by the airport in its current service configuration.

Direct Tropic flights SPR-CUN will never happen. Just too many hoops to jump through.

Plus any hope of more competition and lower fares to Belize in general would be in many ways, circumnavigated.

Belize needs to keep all their international service in one place. Only way to keep the major air carriers still interested.

My guess again is that the flight time will be around 1:20, and the price right around $200 usd one way.

This is a chance for Belize to actually increase international traffic.Direct to San Pedro is the answer,it's easy to say why it can't be done, but this is a chance to connect San Pedro with the international customers that want the convenience of travel that does not exist now in Belize. Most countries have more than one point of entry for international travel,WHY NOT BELIZE.The Tropic planes can land on the small San Pedro runway ,and it would save most travelers a day getting here and an extra day before they have to leave. My shilling's worth:

If the round trip fare ends up being US$400 to BZE, plus the US$125 or so RT fare to/from San Pedro, plus the extra Belize exit fee, I doubt Tropic would do much better than Maya Island did, and Maya was flying larger equipment that appeals to more international travelers than a Caravan.

US$400-$600 is about what it costs to get to Cancún and back from a lot of U.S. cities. Doubling the fare to get to San Pedro or to Belize City is not going to be appealing for the average tourist. There's a market for the convenience over the US$80 RT ADO express or ADO to Chetumal then water taxi to Caulker or San Pedro, but it's pretty small. For that money, it would be cheaper and easier to fly direct into BZE from the U.S.

It's not a value proposition to fly a tiny plane on a two-leg journey to San Pedro at a cost about the same as coming to Cancún from the U.S. or Canada.

Despite the obstacles, I think the San Pedro entry point would lure more visitors.

Agreed Lan. In my opinion (and I am no expert) I would say the magic number for return air from Cancun to San Pedro would be $250.00 USD. Any more and I would never use it and it would not make sense for most people coming through Cancun to use it.

I think the only way this works is if international passengers use it because with local traffic they would be traveling to empty legs for a return flight.

International visitors who don't care for the headache of Miami might be quite happy with this alternative, and maybe we could start marketing more seriously to Mexico with this route as well. The owners of El Secreto are from Mexico City and they seem to feel there is a viable market there.
The other line of thought is the European traveler who wants a two-desitnation vacation?
