Most everyone knows not to try to clean any type of coins etc. I have a friend living in Laguna Bacalar, MX. He is a diver and has a cache of treasure from the area. Swords, coin, cannon balls, silver bowls, jewlery...he has a B.A. in some type of Historian mapping degree????? He has some very very old maps. He is planning a trip soon on a large catamaran he is renovating to follow some maps he has from ships that sank on there chartered voyages. Really intersting man. The history of that area is amazing. He finds most his treasure after big storms, I am sure he is busy now.

There was an amnesty period in about 2000 where you could register what you had and it would remain yours to display but belong to the government.
Yes your right , enforcement just isn't a Belizean trait!in any department.

Hope you can get him to come onto this forum thread and tell us about his finds. By the way, I was thinking about coins when I gave that advice about not cleaning what you find. I am not sure about how the "no cleaning rule" affects other kinds of ancient finds. Perhaps your friend could tell us.

No gold doubloons yet but found a coin from British Honduras recently.

Were the coins for every day use in Belize ever made out of silver and gold? Or, were they always legal counterfeit play money with no intrinsic value like most coins in the world today?
