Amen to BeBelize.
I'm sure a number of the realtors have made sales up that way and further, because their clients WERE seeking the quieter lifestyle with cart road and no street lights. Perhaps the realtors have noticed a drop on those kind of clients and do now pursue and/or seek to please those less easily satisfied.
A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

I guess many people have forgotten that this long stretch of resorts along the beach were all built before we had a bridge let alone a road. Boats were the means of transportation and the north end attracted the tourists who liked it that way. I need to bite my tongue and go to bed. However, I do believe in Karma!

"My opinion is that a lot of tourists come to Ambergris Caye because of the golf carts and sandy roads, not in spite of them." ....and replaced by hundreds of tourists, many traveling as families, looking for diving, snorkeling, fishing, perhaps an income investment to get away from what is becoming a hostile tax environment in the USA, these folks now deserve better services and infrastructure.
I'm sorry, I have yet to speak with a single tourist visitor this last year who approved of the roads when they were potholed and muddy and almost impassable. Reactions included embarrassment (for the island),shock, incredulity, anger (for their aching backs) but never anything positive. Is this how we are to treat our valued tourist visitors?
Those of you who own property here and complain of inevitable progress and have never owned a golf cart or other vehicle on this island might have a point and a place to complain. It won't do much good but it's easy to see your point of view and I sympathize with you.
For the others ... once you bought your vehicle and used the road you became a part of the problem which now has to be solved.

Let me get this straight. Someone comes to Ambergris Caye and purchases property there, a place that has the most developing going on in the country, and then does not want a road going by their property , property where the most land left for development lies north of them, so other people can do what they did. I guess that might make sense to some. Of course some don't have much sense.

Makes sense to me. Blow up up the bridge if you ask me! San Pedro pestilence can stay on that side of the river.

There are some lots across the street and to the south of Birdland that "appear" to be clearly defined, however the actual post markers are buried under the existing roadway. The road is actually quite a few feet to the east of where it is currently believed to be.
The lots in that area have all had their markers knocked down and replaced by well meaning but inaccurate people and then owners have built their houses or developed their landscaping where they believe their land to be, no where the survey maps determine the property to be.
I understand that people think that they are beautifying the road - we do the same thing on my street. But we understand that at anytime the town might come in and rip out that landscaping.
For the time being we keep it landscaped, raked and cleaned. We have told the town board that it doesn't need to employ the street cleaners and rakers to work on our roadway as the neighbours take care of the area.
I went to a little town in Germany where the neighbours all have a roster and it is expected that each resident cleans his area of the road that is in front or behind their house. If you don't you are not only frowned upon but you can be fined!
A little more civic pride could go a long way in this town.
And yes Byron I know what you are saying. It sure was gorgeous many, many years ago..... and it is perplexing that the same folks that complain about lack of infrastructure scream out against it when it inconveniences their tranquility.
Like it or not this island is developing and this progress brings with it inconveniences, it strips from many of us the peace and tranquility that we hoped to enjoy for decades.
The only way to be assured that you can enjoy more peace is to own a large piece of land that is in a "remote" area. But of course that is inconvenient and lacks infrastructure.
It is a catch 22. But at the end of the day we can complain but we can't stop the development so perhaps we should work together to make this a painless to all as possible.

For the others ... once you bought your vehicle and used the road you became a part of the problem which now has to be solved. I guess it is all how it is presented to guests. For my guests, I tell them that there is a path and they can rent a golfcart, but that this is merely just a "path" and certain times of the year it is very good and other things, they should probably consider boat travel. I guess I would be mad if I was told if I booked a rental thinking that I could pick up my golfcart at the airport and drive the highway to my resort without passing go. Certain rentals are looking for rentals so hard that they are misrepresenting their properties and the convenience to town. I represent mine as the truth for the location and the quiet, flats fishing, birds, and lack of diesel smell. There are certain people who do have golf carts or motorcycles that go back and forth to town, but they don't seem to be the ones screaming the loudest. If you come here and buy a golf cart without really knowing the cost, repair work needed to maintain it, and the condition of the road that you want to drive it on, who is the fool. Bring on the progress, but what you deem progress, others might thing we have our priorities screwed up a bit. Now if you want to talk about universal complaints, it isn't the path and ruts, it is the beach trash. Perhaps if you wanted to really make progress in San Pedro and worked on this first, we would present a better picture to developers and buyers and then you may have others willing to jump on your bandwagon to get more development north. Lets just double the population up north and double the beach trash along with it and you will see more For Sale signs than Sold.
