I would certainly not want to be judged as the man that I am today vs. the young man that I was 40 years ago. Add to that the social mores of the South at the time. If you didn't live it, don't judge it. It's that simple.
I have not yet seen one person say that this man has been, for the last 30 years, a racist on AC. What I have seen is a whole lot of white people complain about a man who may, in fact, have changed. Some people actually do change. I know that we have generally moved on from the overt racist actions in the U.S., but I also realize, having been schooled in the South, that familial upbringing played a large part in the racist attitudes in the 60's and 70's.
Quite honestly, if you did not live through that time period, you have no standing to judge those that did. I am always a bit skeptical of those who scream the loudest regarding indiscretions of any kind from the past. I am certainly not excusing Wilkerson's past. But all the vitriol seems to be more of a stand by those who want to make sure that they are counted as out in front of bigotry and hatred because, well, you are supposed to be. While that is all well and good, judge someone by what you know of them today, not in the past. I am sure that we all have some skeletons in our respective closets. Be careful in casting the first stone.....
