Amen, Katie. Not to excuse the ruthless cartels but it is the states' appetite for drugs and our guns being smuggled there that wreak much of the havoc.
Such a down time for us - some of our favorite places in the Caribbean got hammered, crime rates growing in other places we love and even gun battles in entertainment districts at home in Alabama.

Spent a month in San Pedro a few years back, one of 4 trips out of the US in the last 5 years. The first trip was to Bangkok Thailand for two weeks, the second trip was to Ambergris Caye a year later. Since then I've been back to different cities in Thailand for two more trips. I will not go back to Belize, I did not feel safe there, I wasn't in a bad area, but still didn't feel comfortable. During my 3 trips to Thailand, in a half dozen different cities, in different parts of the country, have I ever felt unsafe. Not once. I'm coming up on 70 this year, and if I'm on holiday, contributing to a country's economy, I want to feel safe. Just my observation, not an indictment on any one place.

Life is short, don't waste it being unhappy.

There is crime and violence and people kill each other, all over the world and since the beginning of human history. It will always be that way and naive to think otherwise. Every country has places that it's more likely to occur than others. San Pedro is a tourist destination and the whole of it's economy depends on tourist visiting. Whether it is true or not that our crime rate is high, if they don't visit because of concerns about their safety we all have a big problem. Public relations and better quality of police seems to be the answer.

It's really sad. but unfortunately that kind of things can happen everywhere. I hope criminality will shut down soon but there is not solutions. frown
