Little Free Library installed in San Pedro Town

Little Free Libraries are small wooden boxes set up in public spaces used to encourage children to read and share their favorite books with their community. It operates under the honor system that you take a book, and you leave a book, this way the content of the boxes is constantly changing.

I WANT ONE UP HERE - I put in my request. Very excited to have these ideas spread.

It might need a Neighborly Monitor ..... A couple of our staff members packed up some of their children's books along with their children and headed to the box for a trade.... They said once they arrived it was empty. Let us know if we can help teach people how to use the little library....

It is possible the "recipient" had no books to leave in the box. Hopefully, some child now has reading material to enjoy. Little Library is such a great thing to start on the island. I'm sure there will be a learning curve, but feel good about giving a child a book. Kudos!

Judyann, This is one of the biggest challenges that we discussed before moving ahead with this project. We wanted to have enough books to keep the LFLs (more in the future) filled so that the children would return and exchange for others. It takes children some time to be able to read, so likely they are still reading the first books that they have taken out and hopefully they will return. We have more books to put in but training the steward-mother is also important so that they help teach the neighborhood children to take and return, as well as let one of us know when more books are needed.

Did your children leave their already read books there even though they did not have any new to choose from? Hopefully those wanting to help will bring books (big cry for Spanish ones) so that we do not overload but have enough to work with during the teaching time. We will try to get more books there tomorrow to fill it back up again.

Thanks Janice for responding.... No, they decided to take their books back home..... I'll bring it up at our next Staff meeting and encourage them to help monitor the box as well.... This can be such an asset to our local families.... Really hoping it works out.... Anyone coming from the North please toss in some children's books to donate....

Second Little Free Library installed in San Pedro Town

Another Little Free library was installed in the San Mateo Area in San Pedro Town on Saturday, May 11th. The aim of the Little Free Libraries around town is to promote reading to island children, who can, in turn, share their favorite books with their community. It operates under the honor system that you take a book and leave a book, so the content of the library boxes constantly changes.

The second Little Free Library was built by local Belizean carpenters Jacob and Romaldo and was commissioned by David Threets with support from his friend Jennie Schetnan. They had it built and then contacted Belize Bookworms (team in charge of the Little Free Libraries in San Pedro Town) to proceed with their donation. This second Little Free Library is located around the corner from Holy Cross Anglican School, just in front of the Lopez Store in the San Mateo Area. Belize Bookworms already have a third Little Free Library, which has been donated by Beth Mersch, mother of island resident Alyssa Esquivel. Mersch has donated the price of the library and 50 books in the name of her grandchildren who live on the island. The third Little Free Library is expected to be installed at Boca Del Rio Area. For now, the team will stop at three Little Free Libraries to see how many books it takes to maintain them on the island. If a fourth library is installed, it will be in the San Pedrito Area.

San Pedro Town has a third Little Free Library

To continue to promote reading among island children on Ambergris Caye, a third Little Free library was installed in the Boca del Rio Area in San Pedro Town on Wednesday, July 24th. The Little Free libraries operate under the honor system that you take a book and leave a book, so the content of the libraries constantly change.

This new Little Free Library, complete with 50 books, was donated by Beth Mersch. Mother of island resident Alyssa Esquival, Mersch gifted the library in honor of her three grandchildren who are Belizean/American and live on the island. The new library is located one block away from Casa Pan Dulce in the Boca Del Rio Area, towards the lagoon side, and was built by Ronny Perez and painted by Melody Sanchez Wolfe from Belizean Melody Art Gallery.

San Pedro Town's Little Free Libraries gets updates

Belize Bookworms, the team in charge of the Little Free Libraries in San Pedro Town, released an update via their Facebook page on Sunday, March 8th, about the current state of the literary initiative. All three Little Free Libraries are refurbished and restocked with books, so children from around the island have a wide selection to choose from. The broken door on the Little Free Library in the San Mateo area was repaired, and their book inventory replenished. Belize Bookworms encourage donations to keep coming in, as they've noticed books are not being returned at the rate they need to be.

The island team is accepting children and adult books. There are many ways to donate, such as dropping them off at Belizean Melody's Art Studio at the end of Barrier Reef Street, ship used or new books to the Belize Freight address on their website, who have graciously offered to ship the books free of cost. An Amazon book wish list has also been created, with specifics on types of books to donate, and other donation details.

The Little Free Libraries exchange system: Grab a book and leave one

The non-profit organisation Belize Bookworms has been promoting reading among island children by installing 'Little Free Libraries' in different areas of San Pedro Town. These mini public libraries are filled with books for children and are meant to operate under a book exchange system. When a book is taken, organisers recommend leaving another book, so that the libraries have an abundance of assorted content for others to read.

The Little Free Libraries are currently located in the Escalante, San Mateo and Boca del Rio areas, and the people behind Belize Bookworms have been actively encouraging children to read. They advise that if anyone wants to truly keep a book, to remember to exchange it with another book. This not only promotes the value of sharing and kindness, but it also ensures that the libraries are always stocked. The organisation recently received a shipment with over 1,400 new books, ensuring a promising future for the little libraries throughout this year. Thanks to generous donations, school supplies have been added to the contents. According to organisers, in December 2020, they hosted a book drive asking for a $10 donation pledge, which raised US$1,000. With these funds and the amount of books the organisation has, the little libraries can be maintained for the following six months of 2021.
