My understanding - the investment is coming from private investors in the United States, not the Belizean government - except the roadway infrastructure into the area. Over 50% of the tourism into Belize, visits AC... makes sense to eliminate the 10 minute Island hop, and the airport taxes on tickets and jobs would boost the local economy.

Also my understanding, the roadway has to be completed - and the building is reliant on the road for materials. We all understand the MEXICAN MINUTE in waiting for stuff. Sometimes, a Belizean minute may be just as long.... I look at it this way, would the big name chains invest if there wasn't a fair chance for the structure to happen?!

San Pedro airport yet to be constructed after 3 year memorandum

San Pedro residents have been hearing of the Efrain Guerrero Airport since 2017 when a memorandum of understanding was signed by the Government of Belize. The MOU gave permission to finance, manage and work with an outsider contractor in order to build the airport on the north of Ambergris Caye. It is one of the plans that the former Area Representative Manuel Heredia Junior spoke of on numerous occasions. Its construction was estimated at over one hundred million US dollars, but three years later the proposed land for this massive airport remains bare. Today we sought an update from the Belize Airport Authority on this project that is already well advertised by some realtors online.

Nicholas Ruiz, General Manager, Belize Airport Authority: "We, as I informed the CEO yesterday -well this week when we met, the BAA has a property on the northern part of the island and that is available to pursue an airport at the proper time - there are many elements that need to be in place in terms of the investment part of it, the economics part of it, the legal aspects of it. Yes there have been attempts to get investors to look at that. At this point as far as I know from simply from the Belize Airports Authority which is the manager of the public aerodromes in Belize I am not aware of any group that has concrete plans in place to begin developing anything in the northern part of San Pedro as far as I know."

The MOU was signed with a developer named Jorge Abraham Jaen of International Airport Alliance Belize Limited. That arrangement, however, was short lived as it was found out a few days after the signing of the MOU, Jaen came under scrutiny following accusations of being a fraudster. Documents surfaced showing that Jaen's was accused of making false representations to obtain loans and was arrested in 2006 on charges of fraud, with a previous conviction for conspiracy to commit extortion and voter fraud in the United States of America.
