Try to relieve your wife's concerns. I was scared of that little plane at first too, however, I've been to AC, 4 times now and have even flown over to the mainland and back just to go inland. The poster who said the planes are just like a taxi is correct. It is a lovely flight, if you just let yourself relax enough to enjoy it. Quite fabulous, actually. The pilots just fly back and forth all day long everyday. No worries.

AC is the only place I've traveled that I have never become ill. I've had tourista all over the world but *never* there. I brush my teeth with the water but buy bottled to drink though I have been known to drink the tap water too when I was out of bottled. No problems.

I've never had a botfly or even too many skeeter bites. I've had some nasty bouts with sandfleas but I take care of that now with the deet (Deep Woods Off in the small white pump bottle with the green top).

As for crime, well, I've had no trouble at all. I've heard a story or two but there's more crime here at home. Just take the usual precautions that any smart person would take anywhere and you should be just fine. I've walked all over a good portion of San Pedro by myself in the day as well as the middle of the night, if that is any reassurance.

The only real thing that I would caution your wife to do, is to take tissue with her in her purse when you guys go out. There's always a good chance there won't be any tissue in the ladies room.

Dat, will you be staying over in Bze city or connecting straight to AC?
I know that I did not like spending too much time in Bze city..its a city! I don't much like cities...most anyways, but its tolerable and has some interesting things to see. If you are headed directly for AC then you most likely won't even leave the airport between connections.
I have never been to AC (did hit Caye Calker) but your wife should read these posts...I say "Ditto" to what everyone else has said, well at least as far as for the parts of Belize I have visited!
My 2 most important suggestions...insect repellant/sunscreen and a hat!

I gotta tell you guys that I'm dying to go to Ambergris and Belize in general. I mean I feel like I gotta go! Ive been visiting this board for about a year now and just reading and reading what ya'll have to say and this place is for ME! All of it. Right up my ally. That picture Jane posted is now wallpaper for my puter :-) Awesome place ya'll have there! Its looking like next year before Im gonna get a chance tho. So with that said Dat, if your wife really doesnt want to go I would be more than willing to travel in her place LOL! Just get me there and I'll take care of myself :-)Id be willing to trade daily massage while I'm in Belize to just to be able to go! I'm good! LOL I got 10 years experience in these hands. Its an awesome deal! Ok ya'll...I'm finally losing it over this whole Belize concept. Like I said I gotta go!!!!!!!!! Anybody?? HELP!!!

Please relax. The trip will be just fine. I went to Belize with my pregnant daughter.... talk about being stressed! Not one thing happened that was a worry. The plane was fine, no bugs to speak of, people were so friendly and supportive. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Just enjoy and treasure what the experience is....

Dat, we should mention, several ladies on this board travel to Ambergris often alone, and feel very safe and comfortable.
Just go and Belize IT.

I too was scared out of my mind about Belize -my poor boyfriend never heard the end of bot flys, pica pica, malaria, potable water, whatever...
I did all my research and brought a back pack full of remedies and preventions - just in case.
WE HAD A GREAT TIME! IT WAS BY FAR THE BEST TRIP AND THE BEST WEEK OF OUR LIVES. WE LEAVE IN 5 WEEKS FOR OUR NEXT BELIZE ADVENTURE. THIS TIME I'M NOT BRINGING THE BACKPACK O' MEDICIDE - DIDN'T EVEN NEED IT ONCE LAST TIME.
The only thng that happended to me was an allergic reaction to the mixture of bug repellants and sun screens I lathered myself with.
If your wife drinks, get her a rum punch at Crazy Kanuch's (I have no idea how to spell that)within an hour of reaching Ambergris Caye. She'll be saying - what's a bot fly in no time.
Seriously, she'll be scared until she gets there. Then she will be SO HAPPY she decided to come.
I am the queen of worries, and Belize is hands down my favorite vacation spot.

I am totally freaked out by this thread. If THE IDEA of a vacation is enough to stress you out and cause nervous anxieties, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU DO FOR A JOB???

Have her ride all the rides, Space Mountain, then Tower of Terror, and she will be happy to go to Belize to relax.
