In the heart of San Pedro Town, an Iguana sanctuary is blossoming. With over 200 of it's kind, the Green Iguana, an endangered reptile species in Belize, have found a haven amongst the mangroves in the western part of the town. Mr. Calvin has been kind and caring for these beautiful creatures and has registered the area to be a reserve called The Iguana Eco Corner.

The sanctuary is located on the lagoon side, north of the gas station. Head north on Back Street - until you get to the stop sign. (Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office will be on your right.) Go straight, thru the stop sign - the road is now a dirt road. Just around the bend and… Look for his gate… you can also call 670-8288.

He has created a trail in between the Mangroves where you can see the Iguanas resting in the trees. You can see different types of birds and if you get lucky, maybe even the two resident crocs that live in the area. There is even an osprey nest in which BEL kindly provided the pole and lumber to recreate a nest box after they brought down the tower that the Ospreys used for nesting. Mr. Calvin has been cleaning and maintaining the area day by day but people still keep polluting.

You can visit these majestic animals and if you are willing to donate food for the Iguanas, or lend a hand in cleaning, that would be highly appreciated. It would be great if different organizations can get together and have a clean up campaign to make the area clean and beautiful for tourists and locals to visit and enjoy. The sanctuary is located by the lagoon side, north of the gas station, in San Pedro Town, on Ambergris Caye. Please share!!

Iguana Eco Corner Sanctuary protecting island iguanas

Located on the lagoon sideof the heart of San Pedro Town, the Iguana Eco Corner has been fostering and protecting these endangered reptiles for the past decade. The mangrove area is home to more than 200 hundred green and Black Spiny-Tailed iguanas.

Founder of Iguana Eco Corner Calvin Young shared with The San Pedro Sun that he started with two iguanas, and now there are over 200 hundred in the area. "Ten years ago, I saw two iguanas that were in the mangrove area here beside my house. I decided to take care of them and protect them from poachers, the years, more and more started to come and live here since they felt safe. Now we have over 200 hundred iguanas living at the sanctuary," he said. Young recently registered the sanctuary as a business and is currently working on a tour of the mangroves. "We are currently remodeling and adding new things as to accommodate both island residents and visitors for tours." He plans to start offering tours in January of 2020; however, currently, anyone who wants to see the iguanas is welcomed.

Young further stated that the reason he decided to protect the iguanas is, he wants to teach his sons to be compassionate, to love and protect the environment and animals. "As a single father of two boys I always try my best to teach my sons to be good persons. So, when I saw the iguanas around my area, I decided to start protecting them," he said. In addition, the sanctuary is a haven for spotting beautiful birds and even a few crocodiles come by sometimes.

A Visit to Our Island's Green Iguana Sanctuary

An Easy Way To See Some BIG Green Iguanas right in San Pedro Town and…A House Straight out of Swiss Family Robinson!
Here on Ambergris Caye, people see the green iguanas sunning in the mangroves when they are on a boat stopping at the gas station at the back side of town. It's a frequent tour stop in the San Pedro lagoon.

But now you can drive up in a golf cart or bike or even on foot. Head north on Back Street - until you get to the stop sign. (Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office will be on your right.) Go straight, thru the stop sign - the road is now a dirt road. Just around the bend and…

Look for this gate…

There were piles of fruit and even habaneros. Crazy to imagine…but iguanas LOVE hot peppers.

Holy Cross Anglican school visits Iguana Eco Corner

It was a wonderful day at the Iguana Eco Corner as students from the Holy Cross Anglican school visited the sanctuary. The iguanas greeted them upon their arrival, it was beautiful to see the different expressions on their faces. They had a blast during feeding time. Some kids were brave enough to hand feed them. Many had questions and Mr. Calvin was there to gladly answer and educate them. They explored the entire sanctuary and when the trail had ended they were complimented with delicious refreshments. Kudos to the teacher who was brave enough to hold the iguana in her hands and kudos to Mr. Calvin for creating this place for people to enjoy. The sanctuary was filled with happy faces, the kids enjoyed and I was glad to have witnessed it.

A Beautiful New Look at the Iguana Sanctuary

I decided to take a quick stop at Calvin's Iguana Sanctuary. It is looking AMAZING. Look at the BEAUTIFUL NEW SIGN! He has done so much work…they are about to put a new raised walkway into the mangroves. His home looks incredible. Calvin is installing bathrooms and sinks - to make this all an official tourism site.

The bathrooms are going to be as beautiful as everything in this whole area - artwork. Make sure to see his house…made all of small pieces of wood. I only saw one big beauty - the rest were out sunning in the mangroves.

Meet Calvin Young - The Iguana Whisperer & Owner of Eco Iguana Sanctuary in San Pedro Belize
If you are ever on the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize, be sure to stop by Eco Iguana Foundation and meet Calvin and the iguanas. But first, make a quick stop at one of the many fruit stands and load up a variety of fruits and vegetables so you can hand feed the iguanas.

This iguana sanctuary is the only one of its kind in Belize and located right in the town of San Pedro (Search Iguana Eco Corner on Google Maps). Calvin has been the care taker of the iguanas for over 20 years and would love to show you around his place and answer any questions you have.

Jungle In Downtown San Pedro: MUST Visit the Iguana Sanctuary - Calvin's Green Iguana Eco-Park

[Linked Image]Just around the bend from the main gas station in downtown San Pedro is a surprising plot of wild wetland. A mangroved forest tucked just beyond this sign… …that rang with cicadas and squawking birds when I was there a few days ago. A few steps in…and you'd have no idea that diesel pumps were a few hundred feet to the south and the town's electricity substation just outside the front gate. This Green Iguana Sanctuary is located just north of the town gas station - and just west of the Belize Electricity substation. Back Street extends northward to a sand/dirt road - follow that and you will see the park sign.

The park area is open from 8am to 4:30pm. Fees? Not yet. But these iguanas eat good! Fresh veggies and fruits. And you will see the incredible work that Calvin has done - he is there all day to answer questions. Calvin had done some INCREDIBLE work over the last few months cleaning the mangroves and building a new pathway.

IGUANA PARADISE
In Ambergris Caye Belize We had some time to kill before our boat ride, so after some delicious breakfast we decided to explore a recommendation to see the only Iguana sanctuary in Ambergris Caye - The Iguana Eco Corner.

Meet Zyad and Alex, the wonderful boys who showed us around where over 300 iguanas live and are protected. We also got to meet the owner, Calvin who was not only amazing in his passion and mission to protect wildlife, but touched our hearts with the story behind why he started this sanctuary in the first place.

If you are ever in Ambergris Caye, we highly recommend checking out this place on your trip. Off the beaten path, it is simply a beautiful place with kind people who that clearly love and care about animals and the environment. What a gem!
