Hello,
The family and I plan to be on Ambergis Caye in mid February 2026. This will be our second trip to the island. I am hoping to do an offshore fishing trip (full day) early in the trip to stock up on some fish for beach bbqs and hopefully bring some frozen fillets home as well. On our last trip, I paid a guy for a half day. We went just outside the reef and managed a single wahoo. This worked out well in the end, but I think he was more of a snorkel/tour guide than a focused fishing guide. We used all lures, had no bait on board, he didn’t seem to know how to use his fish finder very well, and as soon as we got a fish he was pretty much headed back to shore. Only one of the four of us got to have any action despite having “time left on the clock”.
What I’m looking for is some local fishing knowledge to be able to ask some intelligent questions before booking again. At that time of year, are wahoo the main target? Is there a reasonable chance of getting into some yellowfin or mahi? Are there any operators/captains you might recommend talking to?
I have reasonable expectations but if I’m spending that much money, I want someone that will make a strong effort to find fish - even if we’re burning some expensive fuel, and not just go through the motions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Neal
