Wow, Marie. That's good info to have. We've only done one resort dive (40 feet), so I still consider us less than beginners. Gotta think about this. Thanks.

Hi Wezzie! If you are nervous, and once I was, I highly suggest you contact Bottom Time. Ask to have them hook you up with Sylvin Forman, he's a dive instructor. Great guy. He and his brother Allen were, literally, two of the first divers on the caye. He can give you an 'update' on your skills, and is such a gentle soul. I can't tell you how many times he held my hand until I did become a good diver. I was a tad claustrophic in the beginning, but Sylvin got me through. I wouldn't be diving today, if it weren't for him. Tell him I said "Hi"!

When I first moved to mainland Belize (1988), Sylvin Forman had all ready made a name for himself as San Pedro's best and we lived 72 miles inland. A good choice.

BEACHES: Three nice beaches for swimming on Ambergris Caye - Mar de Tumbo, Boca del Rio and Ramon's. Please excuse if I negleted to mention an area not know to me.

Not too many budget accomodations close to these beaches, but the island isn't all that big.

Check with Ruby's (close to Ramon's) and The Tide's (close to Boca del Rio) and Bananas is probably the best choice located right next to Mar de Tumbo beach (which is hands down the best naturally formed "swim up" beach on the island). Banana Beach has rooms under $80 per night.

Hustler's Pier is perfect for snorkeling with an abundance of marine life.

Have fun!

Great information, Fido and Marie. I'll look up Sylvin and try out the snorkeling spots. Many thanks!

I think we'll go thru Capricorn.net and spend 7 nites at the Corona del Mar the first week of May. Any last minute suggestions/objections before I book? How about flights...just do what Capricorn tells me? (I'm coming out of SFO)

Later I'll need to ask you all about inexpensive, but good restaurants. I've been writing down suggestions from other threads - El Patio, beach BBQ at Cannibals, Sunday BBQ at BC's and the Blue Water Grill.

Thanks so much!

Re cheap: Think about Ambergris Delights (not at all pretty), but great fried fish, they do fried chicken, too, but it never seems to work out as well. Mickey's is good, especially their Mexican plate. I'm not fond of El Patio, nor Blue Water. To me, (don't scream lovers of each),just to ME, overpriced for the quality. Lagniappe has some great gumbo, just across the street from Fidos. El Devino was good, but expensive. Capricorn is very good, and more expensive. Good old Sweet Basil will help you out when you are sick of Belizean food. And, never forget, you can scrape up all kinds of goodies at Wine De Vine, and have your own picnic. And, there is always Jambel Jerk Pit. I love that place (don't forget to feed the cat). JJP is spicy, so if that is a problem, you won't like it. By the way, after intensive experiments, I can tell you, JJPThen, there are the little joints right across from JJP. I hear the one farthest from the beach has awesome beef tortillas, but have never tried it myself. Re my favorite nest, Paradise Resort Hotel's palapa, call and see when Pina makes her meat or chicken pies. Too Good. And her ceviche is always the best, trust me. Quite spicy, so if that's a problem, be forwarned. Don't worry, you'll find fine food everywhere. Oh, and don't forget to check out the tamales at Celi's Deli towards the end of the week. I think Thursday and Frida. They are totally weird. A whole chicken part in it, skin, bones and all, but darn tasty!!!!!!!
