It is appromimately 2 1/2 to 3 miles S of town. I rented a golf cart. Taxis are inexpensive. The outskirts of town are mroe scenic than in town. However, if you just want to be in the thick of things 24/7, you might want to be in town.

Take a look at my favorite...Banana Beach....your wife can choose from two pools, great restaurant/bar on the premises...about a mile south of town...travel shop on premises to hook you up with snorkel trips, golf carts or bicycles for rent on premises, fridge in every room...my favorite rooms are the one bedroom suites but the "basic" rooms are nice also. Be sure to email for rates as they may have a special that's not listed on the website. Great staff and all and all great place.

I also have to go with Banana Beach, I agree with everything that KathyMLT said. You wife will enjoy having both pools and the restaurant is wonderful.I think all the room types fall into your price range, with breakfast included.

Caribe Island for sure. Has the best beach on SanPedro also with beautiful pool, bar, & restaurant. The golf cart ride into town is a blast.

We like Royal Palm, quiet area, extra big pool & bigger then normal condos. They were renting condos for $75 a day in May. Nice bike ride to town (15 minutes). Located south between Banana Beach and Caribe Isl. There is no bar or Resturant, but several close by. You can see Royal Palm on this sight under lodgeing. Rates are lower then those listed on the sight.

The places that have been recommended to you so far are not in town. Take a look at The Palms, Paradise Villas (Nellie's Property Management or Captain Ron's), The Blue Tang Inn, The Aquamarine Suites or the Sunbreeze. From any of these places you should be able to easily walk to any number of restaurants.
