Must have been a pretty scary experience that would certainly put a damper on your trip.
Another lesson to be learned from this is not to carry around $400. Why would anybody need that much in their pocket, late at night in SP?
I once read about a guy who travels often and always carried a "throw-away" wallet. In other words, he had his real wallet with his real cash in it, but he had a spare wallet with $20 or so in it, always at the ready to hand over.
Not to mention, no matter where you are, it's not a good idea to be flashing big wads of cash around. I've seen plenty of people look into my purse when I've been fishing for bills to pay for my drinks. I've never been robbed but still, it was a bit disconcerting a time or two to have noticed some stranger standing next to me looking into my purse rather than down my shirt.
