Marie Sharps in a spray bottle??? wink

I agree the SP has gotten a bit more "unsafe" in the recent years. There have always been problems on & off - seems to go in waves. But I still feel more safe there than in most US Cities. I have never found the budget hotels to be in danger of theft. Who would rob someone paying $35/nt when they could rob someone paying $300/nt?

Maybe because it is easier to break into a budget room?

And Trina, I'm so sorry that happened to you. And I don't intend to trivialize it. I know that it is a horrible feeling. That said, the reason that I know it to be horrible, is because it has happened to me too. The difference is, that it has happened to me here at home.

Question, do the people from bordering countries of Belize, have to have a passport to enter Belize?

Barb, the idea about the Marie Sharps in a spray bottle was hilarious. I got a visual on that one and am still smiling.....
As for AC safety, the first two years were were there, we did have security "guards" (I don't know if they were trained professionals) They did have flashlights and did shine them around to check on the comings and goings. I felt very safe. Although we did wake up to find someone sleeping on our patio the next morning, (But it was someone we ALL know and love.. Paisano. I guess most people know him and realize he's pretty harmless.)The last two trips, I didn't see any. We stayed at the other end of the island though, and maybe the security was more discreet. I also noticed that we were approached a lot more often in recent years to buy carvings, beads, and drugs. The manager of Caliente's had to chase a stubborn one away from us, as he wouldn't take no for an answer and disrupted our dinner. He was waiting for us when we left, and it was a little disturbing.

OK, Peter, let me rephrase. Does Portofino have a freshwater swimming pool on its grounds?

You should be able to answer that question but that was not the original question asked or what you wrote

Yes, I believe I can answer that question.

However, you are the Portofino expert here. Why don't you answer it? The question does get asked now and then by others. Why not just fill us in?

thanks all for discussing this, I need to be more alert than I thought. It would be a good time for for the community to meet and put into place some workable crime prevention methods. Denny's idea about writing in to express our concerns about the escalating crime is a good one. If somebody would put together an e-petition, statement, whatever it would be called - I would gladly sign. It could then be printed out there and presented to the Mayor, etc. I am with Warren, I don't like the idea of having to be concerned if it will happen to me, nor would I like the idea of restricting myself to "safe" areas. That is going exactly the way of Jamaica - everybody stay safe in the tourist compounds. I know AC is far from that - but it would be nice if it was nipped in the bud, while it is still mostly petty theft.

On our last trip to AC in June we had no problems over the 8 days. We walked the streets, the beaches in the day and at night. Just dont look rich (keep your good stuff at home honey there is no place to wear it here)
