If you look at the date the next response was posted you will see a current date. The one post was 8-4 and then the next person posted 8-15 which activated it again.

While I agree that AC and Belize in general is a very safe place for travelers, I just returned yesterday and think it's important to post this information. The first night we were in AC (Tuesday the 19th) we were robbed on the beach around 8:00pm between the Yacht club and Plyador. It wasn't late, and there were people around, including people within view, sitting on the beach in front of Crazy Cauncks. I yelled for help but no one came. Luckily we convinced the machete-wielding guy that we had no money and only lost a watch out of the deal. When we went to file a report at the police station the next day, there was another couple there who had been robbed in approximately the same location but later at night. They lost $400. I guess my point is that when you are traveling, these things happen, no matter how careful you think you are being, don't think you are exempt.

Geez, that's terrible!! Did they catch the bad guy?

Must have been a pretty scary experience that would certainly put a damper on your trip.

Another lesson to be learned from this is not to carry around $400. Why would anybody need that much in their pocket, late at night in SP?

I once read about a guy who travels often and always carried a "throw-away" wallet. In other words, he had his real wallet with his real cash in it, but he had a spare wallet with $20 or so in it, always at the ready to hand over.

Not to mention, no matter where you are, it's not a good idea to be flashing big wads of cash around. I've seen plenty of people look into my purse when I've been fishing for bills to pay for my drinks. I've never been robbed but still, it was a bit disconcerting a time or two to have noticed some stranger standing next to me looking into my purse rather than down my shirt. wink

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

I've heard of several other recent incidents like this just south of town. On the beach after dark. With knives, though, not machetes.

That's not good. Are there any plans to have a beach patrol or something, since it seems to be happening in the same area? Such a small island, you would think the guilty person(s)could be apprehended rather quickly.....

edited coz I wasn't making sense again....

Waterworld - lighten up sweetheart! San Pedro is certainly not the worst place in the Central American/Caribbean region for violence against tourism!! ANY tourist could find ANY crazy/violent local in ANY country ANYwhere in the world! Don't know where you're from but I know that there are alot higher stats of violence where I'm from than San Pedro. It's also up to a tourist to be smart about where and when they go places. If you have read Marty's post clearly they have implemented the Tourism Police, what other suggestions do you have? I lived in Cartagena, Colombia - never had a problem - cause I wasn't stupid. Weigh it out for yourself......go to Kingston, Jamaica(only and example!) where you really can't go downtown at night by yourself or walk the streets/beaches of San Pedro???? smile Easy choice - true?
