I've been following this thread with a bit of interest. A few details might help. Were the perps armed, and with what? No report to the police? Most of the locals I have met know just about everyone, and if a particular person is not local, they can be identified. I would assume the police have the same ability. Also, with 3 associated banditos, this should also be a pointer.
Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt

From what I understand, 2 of the perps had boxcutters and the 3rd was just muscle. They did make out a "police report", but said the process was less than impressive.

I've been there (lobster out of season). One of the island's most famous, best-promoted and well-known fishing guides volunteered to do that for us out of season. He also anchored us barely outside the boundries of the Hol-Chan marine reserve to fish and actually had us casting into the reserve to catch fish until I realized where we were. You who fish with him often will recognize who, where and what I am talking about.
I'll admit that we ate some lobster (we're never there in season for it) but I've felt badly about it ever since. Our captain admitted to us that he did it (illegally took lobsters) all the time and had been caught and fined for it before.
I'll never use him again. He even admitted that, if he were to be caught once more, he'd lose his license(s) and boat, along with hefty fines, but found the allure of the dollars he made more important than the local laws or environmental concerns. He also made it clear he had no respect for those laws or local authority.
There, maybe I've come clean. I will assure you that, as the person I am and respectful of the laws established to protect the marine environment, this has bothered me for some time. I failed in my duty to speak up.
Please, give the ecosystem the respect it requires. Don't do what you shouldn't do. Your kids will miss beautiful things as a result. Surely not Capt. B ???!!! Calling captJ, calling captj...

WHOMEVER can, please rapidly delete the entire reference to "Capt. B", there was NO need for this and is totally out of line.
This is not relevant and unnecessary.
If accusing Bicho, he is a professional and a hard working family man.

I must have missed something. What does Lobster fishing have to do with tourists being robbed? Anyone who has been to San Pedro lately as I have, knows that the the crime scene there has become worse for everyone. The police are stretched too thin. The Gang Bangers from Belize City are hanging close ...looking for a mark. It is simply not the same as it used to be. Call me what you want...I lived there! The work that the Town Board and Chamber is doing is very much needed and appreciated. Tourists need to keep their possesions closer to the vest these days. You can still have a great vacation in San Pedro..but be aware that there are people that are looking for an easy mark.

Does this mean that it isn't safe for a lone woman to walk along the beach for miles? Four years ago that wasn't a problem - is it now?? Do I have to be concerned that gang bangers from Belize City or even San Pedro may concider me an easy mark? We will be staying at Banana Beach and walking a lot. I was told it was about 1 1/2 miles from town. Will I have to worry about this and stay put at Banana Beach?

Absolutely the wrong approach to just delete the accusations already made public. CM told a story where he indicated he had first hand knowledge of a tour guide breaking the law. He gave details of this person and indicated that he was known to others on this board leaving speculation as to who that might be. That speculation possibly leading to harming innocent other guides who might wrongly believed to be the one guilty. "The truth and the whole truth". CM offered to come forward with this information and is obligated to give all the information including the guides name. You do not harm the innocent to protect the guilty.
People, rightfully so, come forward and name resorts, restaurants and the people operating those business when they feel they have been mistreated. This comes with the territory when you are in business. There is nothing wrong with this as long as the people are giving an honest account of what happen or how they were treated. It is even more imperative that when someone has knowledge of a crime being committed, first hand knowledge leaving no room for doubt if the story is true, that they divulge the name of the guilty person. After all, criminal activity is more severe than bad service. What would happen if some unsuspecting tourist hired this guide not knowing that he breaks the law and is implicated in the illegal activity?
By not giving all the information relevant to the incident, the only speculation that I will entertain is whether or not the story is true. I would hope CM is not just making this up for some convoluted reason, but if he chooses not to tell the "truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth", I am left with having to speculate and I will not focus that speculation on anyone who has not posted this information and who is not named but only made vague reference to leaving room for wrongful speculation. According to his own statements, CM is the only person, other than the guilty guide, who has the first hand knowledge to present all of the facts and remove all speculation.

I felt this has gotten off the subject of this post, but deserves further discussion, so I moved my thoughts to a new topic "What good tourist can do".
