The Lamanai trip also takes a long boat ride. 2 actually. The first from AC to the mainland and up the North? River about an hour. Great wildlife and Daniel had binocs for everyone. Nice ones.

Then arrive at a small landing and transfer to a bus. An hour bus ride (interesting)to another boat landing at a small village on another river, then get on another boat for about an hour.

Excellent trip! Crocs, monkeys, toucans, all sorts of critters.

Best ruin tour is not in Belize - go to Tikal. Get in touch with Tropic if you don't want to sweat the details. They'l book a night in Flores, fly you into Guatemala mid afternoon and you can walk around the town. Get dinner at a lakeside retaurant and enjoy visiting the shops.

Next day you take a bus to Tikal, climb a few pyramids and then have lunch at the jungle lodge. Fly back to San Pedro in the afternoon and out for dinner that night. But, be prepared to pay an extortionist exit fee from Guatemala - if you fly, they gouge you!

Sure, it's more expensive, but a heck of a lot more fun and more impressive than the Lamanai trip.

I've done both and I'd pay again to go to Tikal.

Robert K - we just got home Sunday from almost 2 weeks on AC. Best trip we ever took - you'll love it. We stayed south of town, never made it up north, just chilled most of the time. Our favorite place for supper was Casa Picasso - great drinks, tapas, pastas, and the desserts - oh my! Just not sure how romantic you would consider it - very comfortable and welcoming place to spend some time enjoying the whole experience.

We also did the snorkle trip to Hol Chan and Shark-Ray Alley with 2 different guides. I would definitely recommend Alphonse - he'll give you a shark to hug! We booked him through Monkey Business at Banana Beach.

Enjoy!

I guess it depends on what you call romantic. We had a couple of nice dinners in town, but i think the best was a lunch that we picked up at Shirleys (food court on the map) Chicken, rice and beans with potato salad. $2.50 each (US) and we sat down at edge of the water and ate and talked. Perfect!
