My fiance and I are going to honeymoon on the island of Ambergris Caye in October 2005. We are looking at 3 places for accomodations but the only information we have on these places is from the internet. We are looking at Victoria House, Portofino, & Captain Morgan's retreat. Has anyone stayed in any of these ploaces and if so, what were your experiences. Looking for pro's and con's. Also, any other recommendations on accomodations are VERY WELCOME. We both are divers and love to fish..so any recommedations on good dives & fishing guides would be very appreciated. Neither of us have been to Belize, but have heard wonderful things.

I walked by Portofino last week and the seawall is being improved. Before I would choose to stay there for a honeymoon (I'm thinking romantic scenery) I would check to see if the construction will be finished. Sometimes construction is slow.
A honeymooning couple sat beside us on the plane coming home who had stayed at Captain Morgan's. While they spoke highly of the resort, they said they wished they had been closer to town.
I have had a drink by the pool at Victoria House. What I saw (outside only) was lovely. It is south of town.
I have only visited AC twice and I stayed at The Blue Tang and Paradise Villas, both on the northern edge of San Pedro Town. I loved both of them, but I wasn't honeymooning and my husband and I were with a group of friends. It was nice being able to walk to different places for lunches and dinners and shopping and then return to our own places when we wanted.
I think it is wonderful to begin your married life together on AC! I would want to return every anniversary. BEST WISHES!!

My hubby and I just returned from our "second honeymoon/first anniversary on San Pedro. We stayed at Paradise Villas and really liked the location. Close enough to walk to town, yet it was very quiet. A friend positively RAVED about Victoria House, but I cannot comment on it myself. It is a WONDERFUL place, enjoy...and congratulations!

Captain Morgan's very much caters to Americans, and loses a little bit of Belize spirit in the process, IMO. But they do have a well coordinated activities center to help you arrange for just about any tour or dive you'd want to take. If you stay there or at Portafino, make sure you factor in the $10 RT fare to get into town and back each time you want to go.

My wife and I just returned yesterday from a great 8 day stay. We had lunch @ Captain Morgans and Victoria House. Victoria House is very nice and great pool. Expensive, but very nice. I would recommend Victoria House over Captain MOrgans. All the resorts you mentioned are quite a distance out of town, which means you need to take a taxi. If you like it quite and don't need much then these resorts will work for you. My wife and I enjoyed visiting the outer resorts for lunch/dinner, but spending time in town is nice. We stayed @ Paradise Villas and enjoyed it very much(besides having the condo next to the street) $130 a night and nice grounds and pool.

Just returned from 1o days and stayed at Xanadu, what a great place, great people. They make all reservations for trips right there, the pool is lovely and not far from town.

We stayed at Portofino back in Nov. 04 and loved it. To us it wasn't far from town but we live in Atlanta and it's nothing for us to drive an hour or more one way to get to work or wherever and we actually enjoyed the golf cart ride into town. Portofino also has a free water shuttle into town at certain hours. Just check with the front desk and they are usually very accomodating with the time unless they are picking up or dropping off guests. We rented golf carts every time we went into town. We thought the price was reasonable. I didn't particular care for the set up of the cabanas on the beach. They are like little duplexes with another room connecting to yours. We stayed in the Sunflower suite that sits behind the beach cabanas. The view was a little obstructed by palm trees and the thatched roof of the cabanas but it didn't really bother us (but that's us). The honeymoon suite has two rooms below it. We met a couple that was staying in one of the rooms below it and they complained about the "noise". Otherwise, the food and service was great. I wouldn't hesitate to return. That being said when we rode South of town we stopped in at Victoria House and were wowed by the place. The staff was so nice. They even showed us some of the rooms at VH and they were unbelievable. VH is definitely on our list of places to try on our next visit. We figure we'll be back time and time again so we'll get back to our favorite places even if we try new ones. Oh, we did drive by Captain Morgan's and had no desire to even stop in to see the rooms. They could be nice we just didn't think it worth the time to stop. I don't think you could go wrong with either Portofino or VH but I would lean towards VH for a honeymoon .
