Why is it that everytime the subject of "football" (as in the worlds most popular sport), is mentioned, it brings forth sneers and denials that Americans are interested. and that NFL, basketball and baseball are proper American sports and always will be?
You never hear basketball fans criticising NFL or baseball fans criticising basketball.
This is the case on all three forums I contribute to.
My theory is that this is the "not invented here" syndrome. which is strange because other areas of foreign invention in US like Chinese and Japanese food for example have taken root.
I have seen some very strong attacks on football but most completely ignore the basic undeniable fact that whatever an individuals likes or dislikes, football IS the worlds favorite game, played by more countries than any other.
If someone does not like Japanese food that is a personal choice, but we would ridicule someone who said Japanese food is (say) all raw fish and slimy rice and therefore no good, wouldn't we? Even if that were true (it isn't) it would not disqualify the fact that the Japanese nation plus millions of other people around the world love it.
So it is with football. Different people like different things.
someone on another forum said that understanding the point of view and the tastes of others is a fundemental we should all strive towards.
That's tough. I struggle too.
