Yes Ax, just this year, my dive instructor just mentioned to me that why I love Belize so, and do so overlook it's problems, and there are, is because I choose to. I love what it gives me, not what it doesn't. Belize is a third world country, and if that will bother anyone, then they need to reconsider. Don't expect perfect. Go to have some adventure, if you wish. Give it a shot.
All of Central America is a big step away from what most American traveler's are used to. There's Costa Rica, a little more difficult. And If you really have guts, there's Peru, really rough trip. That was the one I cried at, but still loved the experience. I could go on with stories of Honduras and Guatemala, but nothing was harder than Peru (still wonderful, it's the altitude problem). My suggestion, this is for the adventure. If that doesn't work for you, then better not go. Find a more congenial place. Travel is, afterall, a matter of choice. Belize really is so easy, and the problems are minimal. But, it may not suit others. Happily, it suits me fine.
