Does anyone have any info on dive gear rental? Just wondering about the quality and the prices for gear.

Amigos Del Mars, by far the best in quality and service! Enjoy your time! www.amigosdive.com

I would highly recommend Protech for your rental gear (and diving). As I understand it (and experienced for myself) Protech replaces their gear every 6 months and it is top quality equipment. We dove with Protech for two weeks last summer however, for our Blue Hole trip Protech needed to farm us out to Amigos Del Mar (ADM has a big boat - very comfy for the long trip) There were divers from a variety of dive shops on that trip. We got to see first hand what type of rental equipment others were getting, including ADM. All I am going to say is that we had by far the best rental equipment on the boat that day from our shorty suits to the weight integrated BC's and wrist bottom timers. As a new diver it made a huge difference for me in my confidence level when going down to 145 ft at the BH ... I didn't have to worry about my equipment. mobunny cool

I'll give protech a nod for equipment and diving too. Miner, Brian, Chris, Bundy, Ana and Peter are all first rate, have great attitudes, and clearly enjoy working together. They took us where we wanted to go whenever we asked. They separated the group by experience and never bitched about someone not keeping up with the group. We dove our dive and they just kept the occasional eye on us. For those who wanted a greater degree of handholding, it was sure available.

We did the Turneffe Elbow trip with ADM, and while the dive masters were super to get to know, very knowledgeable, and had the same general attitudes of the protech divemasters and the dives were first rate, the ADM equipment was unfortunately not. We always take our own gear, but several divers had real issues with the equipment. Two divers were forst to abort due to catastrophic leaks and no back up equipment. I'd not have been happy.

There are several good shops, to include Ramon's. People have a tendency to recommend who they dove with as being the best but haven't tried other shops so it is a little hard to give an unbiased opinion. Spend a few hours walking the beach and look over several shops before making a final choice. Dive shops make every attempt to give you servicable equipment but sometimes &^%$##*& happens. You should check your equipment before leaving the dock, after all it is your life support system.
