Thanks to everyone on this forum I'm learning so much!! I'm leaving in 2 wks and just read about pica pica. I didn't know what it was 'til today!! The time I'm going is the season for Pica Pica and I'm definitely buying Safe Sea lotion. It seems like most ppl got it from snorkeling & diving. Is it only in the deep water? How about just swimming near the beach/pier? I'm bringing bug repellent, sunscreen SPF 15, safe sea, but do I need anything else?

Also, does it matter if I apply sunscreen before or after Safe Sea? I think I'll put on safe sea all over just to be safe.

Another question, I'm allergic to mosquitos, but they love me!! - do I need bug repellent only at night or during the day as well? I can't imagine using bug repellent, sunblock and safe sea all at once :-p

bring with you some homeopathic remedies: Apis and Ledum for the bites. it works like a charm with no side effects. also if you go to a health store they should have some sunblock with bug repellent without all the chemicals. and a spray as well. some brands are better then others. so get more then one brand.......... have fun.

Don't forget to pack some gallon size zip lock bags, they came in handy for damp "stuff".

And .... take note when you read to "pack light", I packed light, and still could have left some stuff at home. laugh

I took a couple of candles (romantic at that) and they came in handy as the first night there we lost power for about an hour, think due to a storm. Was ever so cool to sit on the balcony and watch the storm roll in ... awesome

I have been to S.P. about 12 times and have learnt a couple of flashlights come in handy. Some times power goes out for short periods, great for walking home at night along the beach, or for riding bikes at night. I also take a cloths line and pegs[dollar store has them in a set] for hanging up wet suits etec. Enjoy your trip.

Sandflies are not usually a problem in SP. And yes, pica pica is in shallow swimming water as well. I second the homeopathic remedies listed above!

We just got back.... had a great time! We used a LOT of sun tan lotion, and a very high SPF. 15 won't do a thing there... it was HOT! We udes bug spray at night, but I didn't get a single bite. My hubby got one or two, but nothing major. We brought calamine lotion just in case, and some waterproof bandaids, aspirin.... basic first aid kit items. Didn't use any of them but I prefer to be safe than sorry. We used the flashlight every night walking home along the beach. Walked home from having dessert at Victoria House one night and definiteluy needed it then but other nights the moon was full.

If you are allergic to mosquitos then I would do whatever you do in America in the middle of the summer. Keep in mind though that it was windy there so the bugs just flew right by!

Thanks, so I dont have to worry about sandflies..
Hmm, so the sun in Belize is much stronger than in the caribbean & Miami? Last time I used SPF30 (sometimes I mixed it w/15)and I was hardly tan. But no, I didn't wanna get burned, so I'll bump it up to 30 :p

Did you see alot of pica pica? I"m leaving next week.

No pica pica in sight. The guides we were with said there was none around. We didn't end up getting any sea safe and we were fine.
I usually use 30 too- but we were out directly in the sun snorkeling for 2 or 3 hours so the 45 really paid off!
