Sure, most of the time you don't need the travel insurance. But what if you do? We booked Jamaica last year, then a week before we were to go, Ivan visited. The airport was up and running the day we were supposed to leave, but the resort wasn't. We got back everything except the $99 insurance cost. Well worth it to me!

I would fax a copy of the OBIT, therefore "no bogus excuse".
Most people/resorts are reasonable if given the chance and proof.

cayebye I think if you offer advice , on travel ins.it should not be based not on your travels ,life style.if you where lucky and had no problems great.. but in real world of travel where shit does happen... it is a prudent investment.. I have seen hundreds of situations that travels ins ,has been a godsend ,and helped people from emergency evacuation ,to giving them a full refund on all there money for a canceld trip .and while you did rescind your statment about people being fools .some who folks would debate that as they say only a fool would not take travel ins???? two schools of thought..about who is a fool..I only speak from experience as I see the travel world today with more travel restrictions and airlines acting like jerks and tour companies selling last minute bargargins and having a no refund policy for last minute canacellations . different strokes for different folks, better safe than sorry..

Gaz you make perfect sense, and a credit would be fair towards another booking at the same hotel at a later date is the right thing to do .You have good business skills.and to have a win , win is good for business. .

Isn't July in the slow season? What are the chances that this placing was turning down reservations because of this now cancelled booking? IE what are the chances that they even lost any actual revenue because of this?
I still say that if you feel that you were wronged, the first place that you call is the hotel to try and reach some sort of an agreement. If the doesn't work, the second place to call is your credit card company.
I guess this is another reason to travel during the slow season and to not make any reservations...

Just a reminder-travel insurance is insurance for a covered occurrance, that is not subject to an exclusion. It is not a free pass to change your mind. TXT says "... cancel due to a death in the family and funeral expenses.." The former might be covered if it's an immediate family member; the latter reason would not be covered.

Wow! I didnt think I'd get this many responses & opinions. Thanks for all the information. It's great to have so many people willing to help. A HUGE thanks to Ernie (immissing) for helping me out. Whatever you did, we're getting it back now minus 1 nights stay just like thier website policy states (it never said nonrefundable). Thanks again.

TQ-we'll be back as soon as we can. I can't go too long without a visit to paradise Have a few Belikins for your fellow Texans & say hi to the rest of the crew for us. As soon as all this family stuff settles down we'll be sure to take some time out & get down there.
