Xoe, My sweetie is a dive master and works boats a lot, so he's just used to tipping $5 per dip in the water. You're right though, percentage-wise $5 per person seems reasonable for a standard snorkel trip.

Razorfish, lots of peeps don't tip at all so I wouldn't dream of calling you cheap.

A lot of the lodgings in Belize add a 10% gratuity onto your bill.

Many restaurants will add the tip in as well, even for small parties. Never hurts to ask.

Wow, guess I have been overtipping for I usually give 20.00 u.s per day on dives and 3 bucks for maid service!! No wonder I get such good service day in and day out!! Think I will just keep on doing it since I can and they need it more than I do! I am so lucky and blessed to be able to. John in denver

Tipping should not be what everyone thinks is the "norm". I think 20 to 15% if you're not charged a gratuity is acceptable. If you receive service that is above and beyond give more. In the long run it will well be worth it.

Tipping for diving and snorkling should be 15%.

This is where they make most of their money and these people work very hard days taking us out diving. Their base pay per dive is not much.

I enjoy showing appreciation by tipping and feel lucky to be able to share with others in this way. It's been helpful to hear about posters' philosophies and habits, also the suggestion to watch for situations where gratuities have been automatically included in a bill. It all sounds manageable and comfortable. Thanks!

One other thought.........I think of it like hair salons here in the US. I don't tip the owner if that's who does my hair but I do tip everyone else. Same for other businesses, IMHO. Owners, no. Employees, yes.
