When we were in SP during Thanksgiving week, this is how we handled it: When they would approach us (you could spot them from a mile away), I would ask them if they would like to draw a prize from the "lucky bag" (as they often say to you). They would just laugh and walk away.

We loved the guy outside of banyon bay. We would ride our bikes by him every morning...riding very slowly, cause in order for him to look at us he was looking directly into the sun - squinting and trying to figure out if we were local or not. Then his famous line with a british accent....."Are you American?" with a big right hand waving in the air. Once those words came out of his mouth we let him know we talked to him yesterday and sped up on our bikes with a slight chuckle.
