Go to those Normandy beaches. See the memorials to the thousands of young men from many countries who died there. Understand the reality of the sacrifice they made.

In my experience, the French (and the Dutch and the British and the Polish etc.) are very grateful to every country that sent men to die in Europe. Does this gratitude mean that they have to agree in perpetuity with every (sometimes boneheaded) political decision that those countries make?

England was broke at the end of WW2, but not at the start. We had not fully recovered from the cost of WW1 which was only a few years previously but were far from broke, and had been misled into disarming until almost too late. Hitler didn't lose the Battle of Britain, he just stopped it despite his generals' advice that they were on the point of winning.

As to what would have happened if Britain had been defeated it is clearly surmise, but a number of strategists who have written on the subject believe that trapped between NAZI Europe on the east and Japan on the west America would have been in difficulties. And there is no doubt that Germany had the ability to cross the Atlantic in force. No, I don't know what would have happened, but I believe it is likely things wouldn't have gone too well for the USA, and indeed the whole of the free world.

pedro2,Japan thought they would win what makes you think Nazi Germany would have a chance. Besides if not for the monies given to England by the US england would have never recvered.

Deacon - there's a lot written on the subject. NAZI Germany was vastly more powerful than Japan, and the USA would have had to contend with both at the same time.

I'm not aware that Britain was gifted any money by the US - it was all lent on quite strict terms. And after the war was over Germany received far more US aid than Britain.

How's your dad?
