I am traveling to Belize this Friday and I called verizon to see if I could use my cell phone there. The verizon guy said that Belize is on a differnet network so we can't use it. Does anyone have any suggestions for cell phone use in Belize?

Newyork, we had the same problem. Cingular and T-mobile will work in Belize, but not verizon or nextel. So, we went to C's and bought a cell phone, and update the minutes when we need it. We leave it in our condo, and use it only for incoming/emergency calls, or local calls. We use the voip (if it's not still blocked) at Coconut internets for outgoing calls....much cheaper. You might also check in to a low end contract with cingular or tmobile before you leave. Also, if you have a phone that's been unlocked, a tri-band phone, I understand that you can just buy a sims card in Belize and use that. ??? I'm not really sure how it works, but that's what I've been told. Good luck!!

Buy a cheap GSM 1900 phone off of ebay (tri/quad band, just make sure it supports 1900) and buy a BTL SIM card here. Just make sure it is UNLOCKED:

You can generally take a GSM phone to anywhere in the world and buy a local SIM.

KnckrBckrNYC is right! that's your best bet for using a cell phone there! if you still decide to bring your own phone though, do go to C's they might be able to put a chip in. it does cost a little bit to get it unlocked but to me i think it's worth to have!

C's is on middle street on the opposite side of War Paint... War Paint just stands out you can't really miss it, C's is a little more hidden it blends more into the town!

My next trip for there i'm just gonna buy a cheap phone from home (b/c mine unfortunately doesn't work there, a chip won't go in mine, my phone is from canadian company so i'm even surprised it works in the states when i go) and but a chip from belize and unlock it! That's probably your best bet!

There are four bands of GSM in the world. Phones are sold with 2,3,or 4 bands.

I bought a T-Mobile...with a Prepaid card. It has only 2 bands. It works in US & Belize. It didn't work in Europe.

The phone needs to be UNBLOCKED.

I just buy a cheap local prepaid card at the Belize phone company.

&nbsp Hi all,
I've got an el-cheapo Nokia 3390 that's unlocked, has a BTL Digicell SIM card installed and is ready to use in Belize. If you need a loaner phone, just ask.

If you have a cell phone that supports international roaming it should work but beware - for long distance the signal must first pass through BTL and it is very expensive. For local calling is can be cheaper to rent a phone for the week from Mr. C's.

i rented a phone from C's for about a week and although it was nice to have a phone it was a little pricy... it ended up around $80US so i might have been better off buying a phone and getting a chip put into and unlock it there! in the long run it might be cheaper...

it all just depends on how long you're planning on being there!

You can also rent a cell phone for $5 US/day at the BTL office at the Int'l airport, then buy a phone card to use with it.
