We are a newly retired Canadian couple who would like to travel to Central America this winter and Ambergris Caye us if interest to us as we are divers. Questions are: How is the Island recuping after hurricane damage? Can any one advise on possiblity of long term rental of house or larger condo as we like to have enough room for grown up kids to visit for one or two weeks. If we had the right property we would sit for one month or more and tour to mainland Belize, Honduras etc. from a home base.

Would appreciate any comments and advice on travel to Central America.

Hey Sheena,

AC was bypassed by all storms this year, no damage at all.....Come on down....

I think it would be better if you would repost this topic under the forum, "About Ambergris Caye", you will get more replys there.

My husband and I have been to Belize twice and also to Honduras and Guatemela. WE liked San Pedro/Ambergris the best. It doesnt' have the prettiest beach (that belongs to Placencia!), but has the widest range of water stuff to do...don't miss the "Blue Hole". It was a real highlight. The locals are very friendly, there's lots of activiites...kayaking, para-sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving. We loved it and didnt' want to leave. IN Honduras, try the BAy Islands....Roatan was great...West End beach was heavenly with snorkeling. Guatemala was awesome...we went to Tikal. Other folks said Antiga (old capital city) has gorgeous 17C architecture. The Western highlands are also gorgeous. Some have safety concerns regarding Guatemala and Honduras. I would check out the Canadian version of "State Department" and see what they say.
