Hi,

I am hearing some really horrible stories about Taca Airlines and wondered if they are really that bad?

We booked our flight with Taca because they had the best fare and we got to Belize in the morning instead of most other airlines which get in mid to late afternoon.

Any tips for flying Taca?

Thanks

Continental screwed us around real good in April, and finally put us on TACA out of Houston. All eight of us agreed that it was one of the best flights to BZ in years. I think that perhaps it is their baggage handling that gets most of the complaints. From a service stand point, at least on our flight, they couldn't be beaten.

The biggest problem with TACA is a policy of deliberate overbooking. This is less of an issue in the off season but remember that many of the occupants are Salvadorans going home to visit and that is year-long. The best way to reduce your risk of being bumped is to arrive 3 hours early when you check in for your US departure.
In flight, they have the best food and drinks are free.

They also sometimes take unexpected detours to El Salvador...but the up side of that is you get to go shopping in the duty free stores.

Thanks everyone for your comments, it has put my mind at ease a bit.

We are planning on getting to the airport 4 hours before departure. Mainly because the last few times flying out of LAX we have waited 3 or so hours just to get into the terminal.

Anyone else happen to be going to Belize around Oct. 25 - Nov. 2nd?

Hopefully the waether won't be too bad.

I agree with several of the other posters. TACA has good inflight service (though the seating is a little tight), good food and drink, and their equipment seems well-maintained. TACA has a reputation for baggage going to the wrong place, but that's generally on routes to destinations with multiple stops or for example to the Bay Islands where the baggage gets put on a smaller plane for the last leg, not so much to Belize.

I've flown TACA, AA and CO many times each to Belize, and on any given day one airline can be really good and the next time not so great.

Others have raved about TACA. We flew from Belize City to Bay Islands, Honduras and it was a nightmare. Flight left hours late, we made a stop on mainland (unannounced)to change planes,...oy, what a headache. On the way back, no problem. So ???? hmmmm. Just one person's experience. confused eek

I liked the flight itself, but my bag didn't show up until 5 days later (the day we were coming home!) and $30 a day isn't much restitution, but who needs clothes in AC? I was hoping to get at least a free ticket out of it, but no such luck. I'll be flying them again, but I'll be bringing a much larger carry-on...
