I'd go to Black Rock tomorrow in a second. It was a personal matter.

I also ALWAYS feel safe in Cayo.

I dunno Marty - maybe the murders were personal, but the rape was just random violence. I've felt safe in Cayo in the past too. But as a young American female...nuff said.

Returned from DuPlooys, next to BlackRock. Speaking to the locals it was a worker/management incident and the perpatrators are in custody. We felt very safe at all times in Cayo and would recommend that anyone go there.

BlackRock had not informed guests what had a happened and those people we spoke to were VERY angry that they had not been told. One girl only found out when she stopped in San Ignacio for lunch before arrival. She came to DuPlooys with another couple instead.

My husband and I traveled into Tikal from San Ignacio with another couple on a day trip in June, 2000. We knew about the security issues, but decided to go anyway. Our guide and driver were Guatmalan; we thought they would "know the ropes" as far as security, and they came highly recommended to us. We are REALLY glad we went; it was one of the highlights of my life to stand on top of some of those Mayan temples...I kid you not, it was really breathtaking. I urge folks to go if they have an adventurous spirit, and pick your tour companies carefully...shop around and do some research.

We stayed at the Black Rock Lodge over New Year's 1999-2000. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed spending time with John, his wife and their beautiful young daughter Maya. In fact, we have a nice picture of John and Maya. The news of his death a year after our trip greets us with sadness.

HAVE the perptetrators been caught? ARE they in custody? or more spin? haven't seen any "news" postings since december.
