Jan, it sounds perfect. I'm not a diver, so would staying at the place you stayed at be worth it for me?
Also, Did you acrue AA miles?

I don't dive either... In fact only three of the people on this trip dive. Luna Beach is perfect for anyone and Roatan, like AC, has tons of stuff to do other than dive. It is only a 10 minute walk to town. You can also take a water taxi for $1.50. You just stand on the end of any dock and point which direction you want to go, or a regular taxi for very little. The resort also has a full restaurant and several bars right by the pool. I was able to use my AA miles on Taca as they are a code share partner. 35,000 for SFO to Roatan and then BZE to SFO. The puddle jumper and SAP to BZE flights were only about $250.

Sounds like ya had loads of fun, Isle & Andrea. Isle, my time isn't my own lately, but I will catch up with you, I wanna hear all about it. I'm still jealous you ended up with that week at VH, and I had to settle for my short stay at Mata Chica, lol

Continental will be starting direct service to Roatan from Houston in June as well. Taca has some direct flights from Houston or Miami I believe. You can also fly American, Continental or Taca to San Pedro Sula and then take one of the small airlines (like Islena) from there to Roatan (with a short stop in La Cieba for refueling and pick up/ drop off passengers). My Islena flight from SAP to RTB was $125 round trip and you can book your flight online.
I used my Delta miles to fly on Continental now they have that code share agreement. I believe you can also use Northwest miles on Continental as well.
Only a couple of folks in our group dived, the rest of us are surface dwellers and had no problem finding stuff to do. Luna has a really nice pool deck area to hang out on, with the bar/restaurant right there. Or some times we took our floats and floated right off the dock. Both the houses most of us rented, and the beach cabanas all have hammocks if you just want to relax with a book for a bit as well.
You can also take a water taxi over to West Bay beach which is beautiful and swim or snorkel right there as well. ITs a short walk down the beach into West End where there are a lot of beach bars and restaurants. You can also do an island tour, go see the Dolphins at Anthony's Key Resort, the Iguana farm and more... stuff we actually didn't get around to doing but plan to next time we go back.
We did a canopy tour which was a ton of fun. For $3 a person we got a taxi from West End to the top of the mountain over West Bay where you start the canopy tour. THe canopy tour is $35 and you travel down 11 zip lines through the jungle ending up down by the beach. Then we just walked along the beach to happy hour at Los Rocas bar, which is next to the fantastic Bite on the Beach restaurant, and took a water taxi back to Luna from there.
Food and drink costs were quite cheap. Beers were usually in the $1 to $1.50 range depending on where you went. The lobster was plentiful even during May. Lots of great meals and there was enough nightlife to keep our party crew happy!
Hope this helps! Andrea in Atlanta

How's the walk back to the resort after an evening of imbibing in town? Is it safe for a party of one or two?

Thanks Islenutt and Seaislegal for your input! Incidentally Seaislegal, I'm just south of you in Macon. Just a couple of questions. First, how far in advance did you book your air? Continental is quoting me an outrageous fare directly to Roatan. They say there is only one flight each Saturday and already almost full for a Mar. 26th departure. What are my other options for getting there. I'm getting discouraged; nearly $900r/t to San Pedro Sula. Also, what is the best way to get from San Pedro Sula to Roatan? Thanks in advance, Kathy

Try looking for a cheap fare from Atlanta to Houston, Miami or New Orleans. Then look Taca as they usually have reasonable flights either directly to Roatan or to San Pedro Sula (and then the puddle jumper) from those cities. It gets more complicated with connections and all but you can knock a few hundred off the cost. I usually start with Travelocity just to get an idea of prices and then look at the airlines own websites.

Just make sure you have a minimum of 2 hours AT LEAST connection time before a Taca flight. They WILL cancel your seat if you do not check in 2 hrs prior to departure.

Seashell, we walked back in pairs or three somes several nights and it was fine. You just definitely need a flashlight as the beach is dark. Its only a short stretch of beach though and we never had an issue with it. Loafers bar is half way down so there are more people walking around on nights when that bar is open as well. You can also cab it if you don't want to do the night time walk back.
Kathy, I booked my air around December because that was when they first allowed you to use Delta miles on Continental. So I used my sky miles to get there. Other friends booked a couple of months beforehand and got rates around the $500 range, similar to getting to Belize City. The Islena flight from SAP to Roatan was $125 round trip and I booked that online. American also flies to SAP, and Taca and Sol Air fly direct into Roatan from Miami. Continental just is starting its directs from Houston this month, which may be why the rates are high right now. It may drop if they start adding more direct flights or start competing with Taca or another airline.
