The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Commerce andIndustry informs the general public that a 40 ft. slab of the deck of theWacamayo Bridge, in the Mountain Pine Ridge Area, has been washed off dueto floods over the weekend. The bridge is found on the Chiquibul Road, spanning the Macal River and linking Mountain Pine Ridge and theChiquibul Forest Reserve. As a result, access to Caracol is difficult atthis moment. Larger 4-wheel drive vehicles can cross but it is notadvisable. Repairs to the bridge are already underway.

The public will be kept abreast of the progress of the repairs andefforts at mitigating similar incidences.

Wow, I hope that isn't the bridge the Buffs are crossing on their trip to Florida for the big game this weekend.

When I was at the Wacamayo bridge in July, on the way to Caracol, there was a croc sunning itself beside the bridge. Had never seen one in that part of the Macal before.

Guacamallo Bridge. However, there is another even more scenic route to Caracol along the Hydro Road from Benque thru the bush. I'm sure the guides will be using this road while the bridge is being repaired. Ask someone reliable if it's suitable to drive on your own if you have a rental. Better yet, ask if you can drive behind the guide to and fro. You'll need 4wd and make sure you have an extra tire. It's relatively easy road to drive though.
