food for thought: if they had life imprisonment for murder she'd be still alive. same goes in the states.

killing is killing, whether done by an individual or government entity.

texas kills more convicted murderers than any other state and still has more coming into the system, condemned to die. capital punishment is neither a deterrant or justice.

For the record, I'm not a fan of capital punishment.
On the other hand, life imprisonment in Belize is not an alternative, because it just does not happen. The prison is not secure, and the really bad guys rarely tend to break out of jail frequently and easily. In Belize capital punishment is not viewed as a deterrant - it is viewed as a way to eliminate a particular individual's continued threat to society.

I agree with Diane on both points and since we both live here, we have to deal with the practical application of laws. Many Belize people think the return to capital punishment will thwart future murders, but I don't think the young boys and men on the streets with the guns care or even expect to live much past their teens. I had a friend murdered a few years ago and had inside and outside resources and options to deal with a murderer who could never be convicted. Quite a quandary, especially since we knew he would do the same again. The question was, what was the right thing to do? We tracked him down to Guatemala and just two days ago, confirmed that he was shot and killed in a bar by the father of a young girl he had raped. Does it feel good? No, but he won't hurt anyone else again.

another distressing story....this one reminds me of the manager from the resort who was murdered by guys that came out of the bush and raped & robbed guests while they were at it. people who live violently put themselves in the position of being vulnerable to anyone mad enough or violent enough to retaliate; sometimes they die the way they lived. the father of that girl now has to live with being a murderer himself. perhaps when people do such things, they have their actions so rationalized and justified that they can live with themselves afterward. i wonder how the girl feels about it.

thanks for the info, KV. sorry to hear about your friend.

The manager of that resort deserved it as well. It wasn't just a random thing. He was a sicko and fooling around with local kids as well. Sometimes an "eye for an eye" is justified.
