Larvae migrans -- 'dog hookworm'. They come from dogs, live in the sand, enter humans or animals via the skin, cause an itchy rash that is characterized by a track as the worm travels under the skin, are microscopic, and are easily treated.
it is SELF-LIMITING... not easily treated. In fact, most references say no treatment really works.
YA MON... dogs and cats poop in sand, dirt, whatever... Rain forests have other animals who poop all over too. Does your kid have an an uncovered sandbox as this could also present a problem as well.
I'm told that people with open cuts/sores or who have diabetes are far more prone to this than are normal people with normal healthy feet. Attention to daily foot hygene does sound a good idea.
We have treated larvae migrans many times, the medicine preferred has been Mintezol (Thiabendazole) tablets or liquid for children. Always good results.Making a paste with the tablets and applying it to the area as well as taking the tablets orally does a good job at getting rid of it.
