Hi,
It turns out that Mata Chica is closed in September and we were planning on staying there. I hope that this is not because the weather is too bad that time of year. This will be our first visit to Belize.
Can anyone recommend a really nice hotel that is on the North Beach that is comparable to Mata Chica.
We were planning our trip for the last week of September.
Thanks,
Mike

Belizean Shores is great, but I wouldn't put it on par with Mata Chica.
What about Azul. It's pricey but it is romantic, with pool, restaurant, bar etc.
The weather is often great however we may have occassional tropical waves/storms which are more frequent in September and October.

Perhaps Portofino? La Perla is gorgeously beautiful and designed by the ex-owners of Mata Chica, but it starts at 2 bedroom units and goes up to 5 bedroom units. May be bigger than what you are looking for. No restaraunt or bar on site either. Check out Portofino - similar individual cabanas, treetop cabanas and specialty rooms. Great restaurant. Quiet romantic atmosphere. Similar price range.

Patrick Callahan's Playa Blanca might be available. It's private and all inclusive and a walk north of mata chica so near Azul/Rojo Lounge. Casa Pices is also all inclusive, private and between Porofino and Costa Maya.
When I say all inclusive I mean they have Resident dive, fishing, guide, boats, cook etc. Both are very comfortable. If you just like to see the water and want to be treated like a king I recommend Villa Americas. It' on the beach in old town corozol not in san pedro but awsome and 20 minutes to free zone and casino and 40 minutes to Chatemul.
Writer claims no authority, worthwhile knowledge of any kind, and didn't make love to that woman.

I love Belizean Shores. My first visit was September 2005. Hot, hot, real hot. Lots o' bugs and humidity abounds.
But, notice I said FIRST trip. It isn't my first choice for time of year, but you can't go wrong on the choices listed here.
Have fun!
I will have a Belikin -- put it on klcman's tab.

Mikecfish, We were in SP last year 9/16 to 9/25. The weather was fairly dry and windy. Not oppressively hot. The good thing is little rain and a fair amount of wind means the road north is dry and the skeeters arent biting. The bad part was that sometimes it was too windy for the dive boats to go out. Oh and AA misplaced our luggage for the first couple days.
There are quite a few restaurants and resorts that close from 9/15 to 10/15. Seemed like the open resorts were running at about 30% occupancy. That being said, we ate great and did not go thirsty. We had a blast but I don't think we will be going back during that period.

Those of us that live here cherish that time...quiet, peaceful, time to recharge and enjoy the friendship of our fellow "survivors" that also live here...a good time!
