The "Island Ferry" provides transportation from the Southernmost and Northernmost resorts along Ambergris Caye.
The Ferry Station is located at the end of Fido's Dock and is open from 8:30am to Midnight.
The Ferry leaves every two hours during the day starting at 9:00am.
The Ferry leaves every hour beginning at 6:00pm.
All the most popular restaurants have made arrangements that dinner guests will be charged only $10BZ ($5US)from anywhere along the island.
You can call 3231 for a confirmed pickup at almost any dock.
There is a Late Night Ferry for those wanting to party in town at Midnight & 2:00AM on Wednesdays from The BoatYard,
and from Fido's Dock on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and any other night during Special Events.

We stayed at our condo 4 miles north and ended up spending about $150 on the island ferry during april 1-10th. It may seem cheap from your computer but it adds up fast. Maybe $5 round trip would be alot better. Feel sorry for the locals that have to take the island ferry. During this trip i went to Belize city and bought myself a bike, so this will cut down the costs of ferry rides. Just thought i would let people know. Josh

The Island Ferry is a great service but you do pay for it. Some times you can get other Water Taxis and then do not have to go on their timetable but can be a little more flexable.

The roads are getting better all the time but highly recommend a gas powered golf cart if that is one of your options. Again the golf carts especially for any period of time overa day or two can run you some money.

Hopefully they will find a way to get better service to more places up on the north end now that the wonderful bridge is in place. I heard about the bridge going to be built for 10 years and sure enough it did get built and is very nice.

Poor Island Ferry . . do people think that the service should be free?

To determine value/worth, perhaps tourists should try to draw some parallels/make some comparisons. For example, if a tourist lived in Wyoming and went to Ft. Lauderdale for a vacation, how much would they spend on taxis or a rental car, to and from the airport, to and from their hotel, to and from restaurants and sightseeing activities? Then compare that price to the cost of using the water taxi and/or golf carts in San Pedro.

We were able to get a weekly pass for $50 when we stayed at Costa Maya Reef Resort earlier this month.

We also bought the Island Ferry Weekly Passes. After researching for many weeks before we arrived to Ambergris Caye this is what everyone said is a must if you are staying north of San Pedro.
We were at Costa Maya Reef the same week CaroleD and her crew was there (Hey Carole). As the water taxi weekly passes are a good value for going back and forth from the Resort to Town, we also rented a golf cart for the week.
My husband and son drove the golf cart many times back and forth. I only did it a couple of times. We left it in town mostly. We would take the water taxi into town...and our golf cart would be there for driving around town and south of town. We really used the golf cart...
If you don't want to rent a golf cart then buy the Island Ferry Weekly Passes.
If you went on vacation to most destinations you would probably rent a car...So look at it that way. In the long run it would be cheaper than renting a car for a week...depending on how many passes you would be buying.
Research before you go on a trip...could save you money, time and unfortunate surprises or costly surprises.

We do our best to provide a good service.

If you compare our prices to land taxis in most parts of the world that travel similar distances you will find we are quite inexpensive. For example if you travel on our regular schedule to Belize Legacy which is about 9 miles north it will cost $ 12.50US. If you go the same distance anywhere from Belize International Airport by land taxi it will cost you $25 US. Twice as much. When you consider we only get about 2.5 miles a gallon ($10.50 per gallon)on an average, half loaded and compare that to a minivan you will find that a minivan gets between 16 to 25 miles per gallon only then do you really begin to understand the difference in the two economies. To break even at $5.00 per head, as one person on this thread suggested I do, from Costa Maya Id have to fill my boats beyond all safe and legal limits every trip just to pay the fuel bill.

We take pride that we contribute many needed services to the island. Island Ferry is the main support to the Rescue Team which is run out of our office. We provide cheap transportation for school children at a loss during the school year. During hurricane Dean we sent a boat to Belize City to bring in 12 extra police to the island ahead of the storm free of charge at the request of Nemo to provide security and mount rescue operations before during and after the storm. Island Ferry also evacuated 54 special needs persons unable to afford evacuation costs off the island to the mainland free of charge at the request of Mayor Paz.

I understand that people get tired of feeling like they are constantly paying out of pocket on vacation which is why we are putting in place a digital Island Ferry Gold Card system this year which allows you to pay for all your transportation needs up front and at a huge discount. This system has been tested and recieved very well by all our clients. I expect the card to be available at all resorts on the island by mid October.

Island Ferry is very proud of the work that we do and I appreciate the opportunity to clear up any misconseptions. We are licking are wounds right now from the storm but look forward to the best year ever.

There are all kinds of ways to ECONOMIZE. Staying at resorts away from town is not one of them. Try walking!
How much you are spending per day/night on lodging, food, drinks, golf cart, T-shirts, etc.
