BABY OIL! when we were there in December the sand fleas were getting us, a bartender at the Road Kill bar told us about baby oil - worked miracles - we also used OFF Cutter Sport bottle. We are bringing the same when we come next time.

We havnt had misquitos here on Caye Caulker for a LONG time now, months!!!!! People are starting to talk...sand fleas been around but not terrible... I have met and heard of quite a few folks who have had their vacations ruined by bad reaction to malaria pills. I have never heard of anyone getting malaria...I have heard of a few cases of dange....this does not mean that malaria isnt around on the mainland in places, I would not make such a for sure statement.

The best is made by 3m - it is called Ultrathon. You can get it at camping stores. The only problem is that you smell bad. The good news is that it last more than 7 hours. The Cutter stuff lasts only 3-4. I used the Ultrathon in Africa. No bites.

Mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 that we exhale. If you are a heavy breather, stand next to someone who breaths heavier than you do. Works for me...hubby breaths deeper than I do, so they get him, and leave me alone. Not such a good thing when you are diving, tho.
Also, there is a product that is sold at Orvis called REPEL permanone. You spray it on your clothes, not on your skin, and it kills and repels ticks and mosquitoes. I know others who have used it and swear by it...you don't have anything to be absorbed which could be dangerous later.

Has anyone ever tried the line of mosquito repellent clothing? http://www.buzzoff.com/CMSContent/Products-Products.aspx
I guess there's repellent in the fabric? it could be the same thing as sunandsand mentioned.
I hate bug spray on my skin but bugs LOVE me and I have a bad reaction to bites too.

JZB, I bought hubby a shirt, hat and socks from buzzoff. They work pretty well, but effectivness fades with multiple washings. But, you can renew the effect with the other spray stuff. My hubby has a terrible reaction to bites, and we do anything we can to prevent them from getting him. I don't know how well they will work in BZE,but it worked well in VA. The skeeters are a bit more hungry there, I think.

The spray doesn't discolor fabric?

FYI, the 100% deet is overkill. Deet does not increase the effectiveness of the repellant, just the longevity. The higher the deet level, the longer the repellant will last. However, studies have shown that after about 45% it doesn't improve longevity and has no additional affects.
