Just looking for a little input here: trying to come down as cheaply as possible may 17-24, found and acceptable flight out of JFK on TACA, however on departing flight, there is a layover of 55min in El Salvadore, and on return flight there is a 40min lay over also in El Salvadore.
My question/concerns are these:

1. Do I have to clear customs at these layovers? - they do indicate a plane change.
2. is the San Salvadore airport large or small? Im wondering about those short layover sprints..
3. Is this safe for an american? I mean El Salvadore lay over?

I have flown TACA every trip except one and absolutely love them. Have the same layover and never a problem. Small airport, you do not clear customs, but they will search your carry on before you board again. Perfectly safe and a great place to pick up some really good coffee!

we will save about $500 by doing it this way.

seats on TACA are bigger than most domestic airlines, if that's worth anything. (horrible food, but free alcohol!)

Hmm, best meal I ever had on a plane was on TACA. Things must have changed.

Ahhh my "stay" in San Salvador. I arrived on a UA flight from LA right at dawn. My seatmate kept the window closed till the last minute so I missed the views of the volcano as we approached. The airport is just one long building. I had a 90 min. layover so I used my pidgin Spanish (don't expect everyone to speak English like in Belize) to get some food and coffee at the first food stand. I was surprised to find that you could even smoke there. I checked out the duty free shops, looked out the window at what I could see of El Salvador (beautiful place) then went to the TACA end of the terminal. There are places to buy food, snacks, water, etc after you clear their security point. Then I flew to BZE. Piece of cake.

TACA is a great airline. You should have no problems.
