dude, CHILL. we all live here, and we are all getting the basic medical care we need.

if your wife is going to continue to worry on this level, buy insurance to medivac out in case of extreme emergency.

A couple of things to add to your first aid kit--bandaids, polysporin, cortisone, and Imodium. All of these are readily available on the island, but doesn't hurt to have some on hand. Especially with kids, the food is different than what they are used to, and may give some a bit of a problem. Blisters are common, or stubbed toes, and maybe a bug bite or two. I know some of the resorts will call a doctor to come to your resort for you. Not to worry! The kids will have a ball.

Thanks for the info - another question about medical stuff... I have never read any post on this forum re: Malaria/Dengue Fever, even though according to the CDC Belize is one of the worst place for Malaria in Central America. Is it just not that prevalent on the island?

Hey Obake - I am a medical student from Canada, and i am actually coming to Ambergris Caye to work with, and learn from Dr. Damera at the Los Pinos Medical Clinic for the month of July (I will be there on Wednesday). I have done lots of research and you should rest easy knowing that the physicians on the island are well equipped to take care of you and your family.

I heard the same thing about Malaria from my travel-clinic doctor... I was told to take an anti-malaria drug... but i really dont know how necessary it is. better safe than sorry;

If you will be spending a lot of nights camping in the jungle, then you might consider a malaria drug. On the island or most places you'll travel inland for excursions, don't worry about it.

We just got back from the island. Have never done the Malaria stuff, and from what I have read there is no Dengue stuff. We have also never had a bite, except from some type of horse flies north of Mexico Rocks. For that only Benedryl gel worked. It is up to you. I know the bulletins say take the stuff. I would if I was going to be inland in the south for a while, otherwise, no.

Tillie, sorry if I have different info, but I've talked with several of the docs on the island, comparing our customers, and this is the impression I was left with. I'm sure there are the exceptions to the rule, as there is here in the states. And, the times I've had to seek medical attention, I've never waited for more than a few minutes. So, if I'm wrong, sorry.
