The thought would be that the Kindle would be for rent within the library not to go home. Thanks for asking the question so I could clarify that point. We also just double checked that we can download the Kindle from Belize, and we can.But it also gives us the responsibility to make a comfortable reading space for adults. Hence, the veranda.
As to the vendors, I am operating under the assumption that the BTB would help keep the vendors off that beach. We will put a fence that clearly delineates the space. But we will definitely need BTB help.

The other used book issue is that we will be having a book sale shortly and I will make a special area of really cheap books for kids so that anyone who wants to donate books to local kids can come and get them. Introduce yourself and they will be even cheaper!!!!

A couple of questions about the books for children.
Does it matter if they are paperback or would they prefer hard back only?
What about multiple copies of books?
Travelqueen, if paperback's are OK - how many pounds of books do you want?

Library personnel have told me that paperback books do not hold up very well to use by multiple children and to the humidity. They have wrapped the covers in plastic in attempts to make the books last longer, but hardback books seem to last much better. Because of limited space I believe the multiple copies are not kept in the library. In some instances they have been sent to other libraries elsewhere in Belize. For some time there was a great need for children's books in Spanish. I don't know if that is still the case.

We seem to have split this thread into 2 subjects: Books that I would like to give to local children and books that the library would like to have donated to them.

Regarding books for me to distribute, I do not have a preference for paperback or hard back. Multiple copies are definitely okay. Originally I wanted books specifically for one 7-year-old local girl, but additionally I have 2 local families (with a total of 5 children) targeted for any books that are brought for me to distribute. I would like to give several books to each child in those 2 families (ages 4 thru 14), and any additional books will be distributed to the other families/children that I make contact with -- pretty much on the south side of the island where we live, including the DFC area.

I will distribute, for free, as many books as are provided, and I will be happy to pay for books that have been purchased at used prices (preferably under $0.50US per book).

I will suggest to the parents of the each child who receives a book that the book ultimately be donated to the local library, should they care to do so.

Thank you!

Send all of them. I will be down at the end of this month and hopefully again next month so eventually all of the books will get to SP. Also, I know people that transit through Houston so I can send them with other folks.

I can donate them to either Salty Dog or the Library - either is fine. Mine are going to Salty Dog because I made the commitment and I have what she is looking for.

Thanks in advance.

I'll be in SP in early December, and should be able to bring a few books to donate.

I'm excited about the renovations for the library!

Does anyone else have good reccommendations for used bookstores on the island? I hate lugging books on vacation, if I could just buy a few when I get down there and/or leave the ones I've completed, that would be awesome.

Barefoot Books should be reopened at that time (I just heard but was not confirmed).

The library will allow you to check out books. They have a fairly extensive and current adult fiction section.
