I was just referring to my recent experience, where all vets incl. the USDA vet service office strongly adviced against it.
Also, I traveled with my dogs on AA two weeks ago, and I had to sign a statement that the dogs were not sedated, or they wouldn't take them. It is also stated at their website, but not sure if this is just for dogs that cannot go in the passenger cabin.
Anyway, I found it very stressful to travel with animals with AA, and I think that Continental has done a much better job for me before.

Interesting. I have not found any difference between flying on either with an animal on Continental or AA with animals (with exception to having a difficult worker last time who denied me on the flight in Oct.) American only charges $100 per checked animal while Continental charges $500. I too agree it is very stressful flying with animals however have no choice and do it on regular occasion.

Actually Continental says they follow the AVMA guidelines and will not knowingly accept an animal that has been sedated. We have flown our labs back and forth a couple of times and each time they have made an issue of it. If like Kelli you have a dog that does not travel well, you really have no alternative because it is very stressful for some animals. As the pets owner, it is up to you to do what is best for your pet.

agreed. It is up to you. Both of my vets recommend it. I dont get how the airline makes an issue of it if you they dont know if you sedated the dog. Sedating a dog only makes them calmer and somewhat drosey.

Back on subject - Dog passport. I checked when I brought my pups in... It is $100bz per dog and is good for one year. There are probably other fees but that is what they quoted me. They need a long lead time to get the passport-at least a month. The permit on the other hand is no more then a couple days and usually 24hours.

The permit to bring in the dogs was $50bz and some other fees final total $92. They let me bring 2 dogs on one permit - seemed odd to get a deal.

Guess it is worth while if you are back and forth several times a year.

Thank you Pam!! This is great to get the info on the dog passport, $100 for one year is fantastic with how much traveling Karmin does! I wonder if it only good for entering Belize without a permit and if I'll still need the health certificate each time as well. Did they tell you? I have emailed BAHA three times with no response on the passport.

It is only good for entering Belize - no where else. It eleminates the need for a permit. The email I used is animalhealthbz@gmail.com They were very quick with answers.
