I now need a permit to fish at my favorite spot, Hol Chan? What was the five bucks for all these years?

$5 a look.

Then, like the exit fee to fly home, they can charge a fee to get out of the water after snorkeling.

A fee to use the air to get dry.

A fee to use the sand to walk on.

I hope that someday we can put aside our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

Costa Rica's fishing license

Wouldn't be too bad if used to help curb the illegal fishing.

I have also fished in Costa Rica, have never been asked to buy a license; when did this go into effect?

Ditto Cap

I don't mind paying a fee for a year on my boat but to charge a tourist every time they get on a fishing boat will do nothing but disuade them from comming here in the first place!!!!

PS It will also cost the locals a WHOLE whack of money as their boats sit at the pier unused.

So it costs $10 to go fishing for a full day? Darn, my fishing trip went up 3%. Four less Belikins for me, DAMN IT!

I see cancellations piling up all ready!

Pack you bags, move to Cuba!

I thought it was $20 US per day. But then again, the details, including where to buy the license, who will enforce it, where the money is going, who has to buy one, what the money will be used for, etc....are not available. Imagine that.

A lot of overreaction to this subject without much knowledge of what's happening. What if the tax is implemented, is used efficiently and helps preserve the fish stock for generations to come. Capt Jeff fishes here, and elsewhere I imagine, a lot and often mentions how cheap the fishing is here. So if there was a permit cost that caused the price to go up and it went towards keeping this resourse alve and kicking would you still baulk at the extra cost.

Phil,

That is one of the issues. No one has come forward to say how this will be enforced, nor have they said what the money will be used for. Transparency please. That is the major issue.

Park fees at Hol Chan help pay for rangers to keep out fishing, keep people and the reef safe. If the cost of the fishing license goes only to pay for someone in a boat to enforce it, then what use is it except to give one person a job?

No one is able to say where the licenses will be able to be purchased, from whom, or for what purpose they are being issued.

Do they apply to children? What about local fishermen who are out fishing every day? Do they have to pay?

All of the unanswered questions are the problem. This is not the first "fee" people have been asked to pay without explanation. A few years ago, residents with vehicles were instructed within one week that they had to appear in the old football field and pay a $10 fee for a "how's my driving" sticker with a phone number on it. I have called that phone number on numerous occasions and no one has ever answered. The "urgency" with which we were all called to action had no reason behind it, no follow through, and not a peep since. AND no one answers the phone number.

"What if" is a big question here about lots of things.
