You forget fuel and by far the largest cost of owning a vehicle maintenance.

From the specs on the Rhino:

"Steel frame is lightweight and features outstanding durability with superior rigidity for superb handling."

Simply put it means that it will probably last no more than 3 or 4 years before it rusts out. A complete waste of money.

Polaris has a powder-coated frame which holds up fairly well.

ANY vehicle with a steel frame, IMHO is a waste of money here in Sanpedro, consider them disposable. 2-3 years and they are a very costly project. Just ask anyone who has owned one.

Club Car has a line of utility vehicles out now with the designation XRT. They have a kubota diesel engine and a rust proof corrosion resistant aircraft grade aluminum frame. It would be interesting to see how it held up in the long run down their. From a materials of construction standpoint it should have a good chance of survival but I do not know from a reliabilty standpoint (is it tough enough to handle SP roads). I own a trans mule that has over 800 hours on it in the states and it spends a lot of time in the mud and has held up well. The difference is I do not have to contend with sand and salt.

Club cars have an aluminum frame, and yes they hold up the best, you can still see very old club cars on the island. Polaris vehicles do have a powder coated undercarridge, but do not stand up to more than a few years at best.

shocked for someone named SunshineGal, that was a pretty dark response. I apologize if I hit a nerve, since it's pretty obvious that I did. I'm not trying to take over AC with giant $50K souped up golf carts and turn it into a race track. I was simply asking a question, since I read on these boards very, very often about how the road is impassable, the road is terrible, they should fix the road, etc, etc, etc. I wasn't looking for sarcasm, just for people's thoughts, and to maybe let poeple know about an option that they may not have known existed. I didn't know those things existed until I moved to San Diego, so I figured other people might be in the same boat.

Oh, and about the 'dying desert' comment, the vast majority of recreation in the desert takes place in designated areas, so there is little to no impact on the 'dying desert' you speak of.

Since I live in one of the areas and you don't, I guess I know quite a bit more about the impact of illegal ATV activity than you do. So believe all you want about how designated areas are being used and then ask some questions or do a little research and you will find out the truth.

I also find it comical that you think the people of San Pedro are so isolated that they wouldn't possibly know about souped up modes of transportation. If you had spent much time north of the bridge, you would know that there are already problems with dirt bikes and golf carts. They have to put up blockages so that people don't drive the carts on the beach and add to the beach erosion. Please help our world, learn about the impact of American overindulgences on a little island like AC or the use of ATVs on the SoCal desert. You did hit a nerve, but more with the arrogance of your response and the fact that you didn't consider that people go to AC because they love it the way it is, not the way you may want to improve it.
