The drugs and antibotics are always much needed and they are the hardest to get. Something for tourist to keep in mind. When I was coming on my first trip here I emailed the vet and asked what was needed most. She sent me a list. A lot of the items needed to be obtained from a vet. My vet did not just want to hand over drugs on such short notice. I now have a system set up with him. The vet can write a prescription for the needed drugs and he can verify that with her via email. He then allows me to pay for them and pick them up. I wanted to just give money for the needed drugs but it was explained to me that is not the easiest way for them because of shipping and duties and such. So if you are visiting talk to your vet before hand ask if this an option. A lot of rescue groups keep huge stashes of antibiotics on hand so that may be another way to go. Of course anything you bring will be a help.
This trip I brought a lot of dog and cat collars, toys, leashes and such. They were so appreciative and they allowed me to pass out toys. Lauries dog had his head in the bag before I could get in the door and had a tennis ball bouncing around the clinic in no time.

Jon, please pre-arrange shipments with SAGA. If you send items via the post (or any other means of shipping) then SAGA will be charged stamp duty. The duty is charged on the value of the goods, the shipping/freight cost and a few other charges. What I am saying is that if you send down a $5 dog collar it could cost SAGA another $5 to get the donation released from Customs.

A lot of well meaning folks send items to the library, SAGA and other causes not realizing that the charity cannot afford to pick the items up due to lack of funds to release the goods from customs.

This is why folks are urged to bring down meds, and small items such as pet toys when they visit on vacation. Typically the customs officer will allow them to pass through customs without paying any duty because they know it is intended to be a donation to a charity.

Although the idea of sending down science diet dog food is sweet, the fact is that it will ending up being too costly. You can probably buy 4 sacks of pedigree for the cost of one bag of science diet. Send the $$ instead.

Thanks for caring.

What I would do is send the Drugs and the major stuff down Via Purolator but inside I would send them money to help pay for what I have sent down so they are not out of pocket.

Just to add to what Amanda said. I visit San Pedro every month so I know that I am more likely to be searched. I declare my donations (write school supplies donation or pet supplies donations) and they never charge me fees. Last week I said do I owe you anything. The customs agent asked me where I was taking the items and I told him. He then said, "No, that way please!"

Does SAGA provide a charitable receipt for income tax purposes for financial donations?

Isn't there a problem of the shelf life of antibiotics in our climate? I was told once that little quite often is much better than a few large deliveries.

I have heard that right now SAGA's budget has been hit v hard due to necessary repairs to "Fort Dog" (the area where stray dogs are kenneled) - they need $$$ too!!

Do they do this when they receive money?
